Game preview
It’s sibling rivalry night at Capital One Arena, and at least one member of the Hutson family is going home unhappy.
Washington Capitals rookie defenseman Cole Hutson will face his older brother, Montreal Canadiens star Lane Hutson, for the first time in an NHL game Wednesday night. Lane, the 2025 Calder Trophy winner, has six points in six games this season, while Cole has three points in his first full NHL campaign. Their parents, Rob and Julie, will be watching from the stands, with bragging rights absolutely on the line.
The Capitals (3-3-0) return home looking to snap a two-game losing streak after falling 4-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. Washington twice held the lead before Andrei Svechnikov‘s late power-play goal broke a 2-2 tie. Montreal (3-2-1), meanwhile, has won two straight games, most recently defeating the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 in a shootout. Both teams will be playing their second game in as many nights.
Washington will again be without Pierre-Luc Dubois (illness), Matt Roy (lower body), and Rasmus Sandin (knee). Justin Holl is expected to remain in the lineup after scoring in his Capitals debut Tuesday. Charlie Lindgren will start in goal for Washington, opposite Jakub Dobes for Montreal.
Puck drop is at 7:30 pm on Monumental Sports Network, with Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin on the call. It’s Hispanic Heritage Night at Capital One Arena.

Hutson Bowl I
1st Period
Bob McDonald sings both anthems… perfectly, might I add.
Tuch-Strome-Kyrou and Chychrun-Liljegren get the start for the Capitals against Kreider-Newhook-Anderson and Guhle-Carrier.
Puck is dropped.
Kyrou mishandles the puck right to the Habs. Layup for Josh Anderson.

Power play
Cole Caufield interference penalty on Boone Jenner at 5:54
As the Capitals’ power play expires, Kyrou takes the puck to the middle of the ice and beats Dobes over the pad. That certainly makes up for his earlier mistake.
1-1 tie
Goal: Jordan Kyrou (2). Assists: C. Hutson (3), A. Tuch (1). Time: 7:56
Lane Hutson with an unbelievable highlight-reel goal as the Caps make a line change. Wow.

2nd Period
Puck is dropped.
Sourdif misses the net badly on a shot. Next rush down the ice, Sourdif is in the home plate area wide open, and decides to drop a pass, that the Canadiens steal. Oy vey.
And now the hat trick of bad.
Penalty kill
Justin Sourdif tripping penalty at 4:34
Alex Tuch bails Sourds out, scoring shorthanded! Caps have their first lead.
3-2 Washington Capitals
SHG: Alex Tuch (4). Unassisted. Time: 6:16
Power play
Josh Anderson holding penalty on Dylan Strome at 7:36
Anderson wide open chips home a centering pass from the corner boards past Lindgren easily. Looked like a fire drill for the Caps defensively.
3-3 tie
Goal: Josh Anderson (4). Assists: A. Newhook (3). Time: 12:58
Owen Beck beats Lindgren but his shot rings off the post and out.
Ivan Miroshnichenko blows up Juraj Slafkovský in the neutral zone with a big hit – shoulder to chest. Carrier is going after Miro. Juraj then slid into Wilson skating up the ice, slamming his head into his legs.
Officials are calling Miroshnichenko for a five-minute major so they can review the play. Slafkovský went down the runway briefly but he’s back a minute later and is fine.
No major, Caps get a power play after all of the extracurriculars by Montreal.
Power play
Alexandre Carrier and Ivan Miroshnichenko get matching minors for roughing, Kaiden Guhle gets an extra minor at 15:42
Arber Xhekaj goes after Tom Wilson after Dobes freezes the puck and he takes an extra whack.
At intermission: Caps-Habs tied 3-3. Habs lead big in shots now 21-14. Under the hood, there are some concerning trends. The Caps have created 0 high-danger chances at 5v5 and the Habs are leading in scoring chances 24-5.
3rd Period
Puck is dropped.
The first half of the period is very low event — lots of tight checking as both teams look for the next goal. Just five shots (3 WSH 2 MTL) between the two teams.
A Justin Holl point shot goes in. I mean, who didn’t have him scoring in consecutive games? lmao
