Logan Thompson briefly addressed the brouhaha between the Capitals and Hurricanes during the first period of Tuesday’s game.
After Nic Dowd knocked over Frederik Andersen behind the net, the Hurricanes’ goaltender got involved in the resulting fracas. Thompson skated up to the red line and dropped his gear down, ready to throw hands, but officials separated the two netminders before a goalie fight broke out.
“First of all, I have tons of respect for Andersen as a goalie and a player in this league,” Thompson said. “I grew up watching him, and (have) a lot of respect.
“I think it’s just one of those things where you see your guys a little outnumbered there, so I just wanted to try and come and help out. But again, no animosity towards him, and I’m a big fan of his game.”
Despite leaving his crease, Thompson did not receive a penalty from officials, while Andersen was given a two-minute minor for roughing after getting physical with Dowd.
Late in the third period, Andersen would leave the game early after being crashed into by Jordan Staal in front of the net.
Thompson earned his seventh victory in 11 starts this season, stopping 30 of 31 Hurricanes’ shots.
“This is a tough rink to win in, so credit to the guys,” Thompson said. “We came out hard. I thought we brought it to them tonight. Hopefully, we can build off this and play our game. I think we’re as good as anyone in this league.”
