Jordan Binnington’s failed heist of Alex Ovechkin’s 900th goal puck remains a topic days later, despite the goaltender’s claim that “I had full intention to give it back to him.”
Some Capitals players, though, appear to remain dubious, including fourth-line forward Brandon Duhaime, who tried his best to hold his tongue while speaking to 106.7 The Fan’s Sports Junkies.
As the Junkies set up their question and called Binnington a “weasel,” Duhaime offered his take in the most measured way possible.
“Yeah. I mean, I thought it was bizarre when I saw it,” Duhaime said. “I didn’t see it live. It was pretty… Yeah. Everyone was kind of focused on Ovi and going after him, and then I saw the clip after. I just thought it was a little bizarre. That’s all.”
Duhaime, who spent his first three seasons in the Western Conference with the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche, was asked if he knew the Blues netminder well as a person.
“No, no, no, no,” Duhaime said. “I mean, just from playing him over the years. Just yeah, he was a good goalie over there.”
As the Junkies continued to muse on what Binnington’s intentions were, Duhaime pointed out that whatever he was trying to do was likely to be fruitless because “there’s a few cameras out there.”
Historic pieces of game-used sports gear are highly valuable and can be worth millions, depending on the milestone they are associated with. Some pieces have even turned up missing, such as Tom Brady’s Super Bowl LI jersey, which was eventually found thanks to cameras at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
Duhaime agreed that players on the ice are aware of who they’re suiting up against, especially historic ones like Ovechkin. And he still pinches himself that he gets to play on the same team as him.
“For sure,” Duhaime said. “Anytime you play with legends like that, like, you know, when I first came in and saw O in the locker room, it was a pretty surreal moment growing up, you know, watching him, and then, you know, being teammates with him for the past couple of years is pretty cool.”
