Nicklas Backstrom appears to be preparing for a move of some sort.
The Swedish center put his incredible 7-bedroom, 12-bathroom Northern Virginia home on the market earlier this week. Backstrom listed the home through realtor Sherif Abdalla of Compass, and it has a $14,999,995 asking price.
The news was first reported by DC Urban Turf on Sunday and confirmed by a Zillow search.
Backstrom bought the 16,000 square-foot residential property just after it was constructed in 2021 for $8.5 million.
The news comes with Backstrom’s contract with the Washington Capitals set to expire this summer. The 37-year-old center spent the entire 2024-25 campaign on long-term injured reserve and has not played in a game since October 29, 2023. He officially stepped away from the team days later due to lingering issues with his surgically-repaired hip.
The Capitals’ all-time leader in assists owns a luxury villa in his native Gävle, Sweden, which he had built in 2010.
“I actually dreamed about this when I was young, about living by the water and having a jet ski and being able to enjoy the summer,” Backstrom told Aftonbladet’s Simon Norberg in 2021 of the home, per a translation via Google Translate.
Backstrom and his wife Liza have three children: two daughters, Haley and Alizee, and one son, Vince. The family regularly returns to Sweden during the summer, with Nicklas and Liza getting married in Skytteholm back in July of 2022.
