Alex Ovechkin could add new goaltender to goals list as Joey Daccord will start for Kraken against Capitals

Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin could add to his NHL record for most goaltenders scored on when the Capitals face-off against the Seattle Kraken on Sunday afternoon. Per NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman, Ovechkin will play his fourth career game against Kraken goalie Joey Daccord.

Ovechkin set the record, 179 unique netminders, when he scored an overtime winner against Ottawa’s Leevi Merilainen on January 16. He has added two others to his list since then: Philadelphia’s Ivan Fedotov and Edmonton’s Calvin Pickard.

The Great Eight has tested Daccord with nine shots in their three prior meetings without scoring. Ovechkin did score in the Capitals’ 3-0 win against the Kraken on January 23 but into an empty net.

Daccord is 21-17-3 this year with a 2.64 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage, and one shutout. The 2024-25 campaign is his second season as Seattle’s starter after taking the reins from former Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer last year.

In seven career games against the Kraken, Ovechkin has recorded 10 points (4g, 6a). His next point will be the 1,600th of his NHL career. Only 10 other players have previously achieved the milestone.

Ovechkin is also just 10 goals shy of passing Wayne Gretzky for first on the NHL’s all-time goals list. He has 19 games remaining to secure the record this year.
