Alex Ovechkin has goals in consecutive periods and four-straight games after scoring in the opening stanza against the Philadelphia Flyers, Thursday.
Ovechkin found paydirt in the “McNugget Minute”, snapping a shot past Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov after receiving a sensational feed from Martin Fehervary.
The goal was the 879th of Ovechkin’s career, putting him to within 16 of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record.
“I saw Stromer by himself out there and obviously he makes a hell of a play holding up, Marty was flying, and then obviously great pass, so I just had to finish,” Ovechkin said at intermission to Monumental Sports Network’s Al Koken.
The tally, from 24 feet away, tied the game 1-1 and came shortly after fellow countryman and highly-touted young star, Matvei Michkov, scored on a breakaway.
Michkov would another goal in the second period.
With 26 goals in 38 games played (0.68 G/GP), Ovechkin is on pace to score 45 times in his age-39 season. He is projected to tie Gretzky’s record on April 4 against the Chicago Blackhawks and break the record on April 6 against the New York Islanders.

Ovechkin also welcomed Flyers netminder Ivan Fedotov to his vaunted list with the tally, making the young Russian the 180th different goalie he’s beaten.
The point was also Ovechkin’s 1,590th of his career, tying him for 11th on the all-time list with Phil Esposito.
