A night after falling to the Montreal Canadiens, the Washington Capitals are in Nashville to take on the Predators.
To be blunt: the Capitals’ five-on-five play has been stinky since returning from the holiday break. Tonight is another opportunity to get back on track, but after playing 25 hours previously, the Capitals have a tough task in front of them with a rested Preds team.
Ethen Frank, after recording his first NHL point against the Habs, is back in the lineup after Spencer Carbery called him arguably the team’s best player last night. Carbery said though, playing well consistently is always the thing that holds certain Hershey prospects back at the NHL level.
Logan Thompson will be back in the cage despite playing last night due to Charlie Lindgren’s injury. The Capitals called up Hunter Shepard this morning to back LT up.
The Capitals-Predators game is airing on Monumental Sports Network. Joe Beninati and Alan May have the call. Puck drop is at 8:00 pm. We only have to endure the clashing Devo helmets for one more time this season.

1st Period
Puck is dropped.
Caps look plodding early.
That was another one of those “tractor pull” first periods as Craig Laughlin likes to say.
Only 5 shots for the Caps. This is becoming a trend and it’s not good.
At intermission: Predators are outshooting the Capitals 8 to 5 and out-attempting the Caps 24 to 13 at five-on-five. No goals, no penalties.
2nd Period
Puck is dropped.
Oh hey a Capitals power play! Nick Blankenburg to the box 41 seconds in after tripping Aliaksei Protas
Capitals can’t get a shot during the man advantage.
Caps still don’t have a shot this period.
Roman Josi to the box for tripping at 7:56 of the period.
🚨 1-0 Washington Capitals. WSH PPG: Tom Wilson (19). Assists: D. Strome (34). Time: 09:03.
And on the Capitals’ sixth shot of the game and their first of the second period 9:03 in, Tom Wilson scores in front of the net. This team has 9 lives.
Logan Thompson with a huge save on a Preds’ two-on-one.
Taylor Raddysh to the box at 15:32 for holding Roman Josi. I would too he’s dreamy.
🚨 1-1 tie. NSH PPG: Filip Forsberg (11). Assists: J. Marchessault (17). Time: 16:14.
Cosmic, kinda.
The first two goal-scorers in the WSH-NSH game were both Capitals' first-round picks in the 2012 NHL Draft:
– Filip Forsberg, 11th overall
– Tom Wilson, 16th overall— Ian Oland (@ianoland) January 12, 2025
At intermission: The game is tied 1-1. The Caps had THREE shots in the second period. The Predators are outshooting the Caps 20 to 8.
3rd Period
Puck is dropped.
🚨 2-1 Washington Capitals. WSH Goal: Ethen Frank (1). Assists: M. Roy (9), M. Fehervary (10). Time: 08:30.
Ethen Frank scores his first NHL goal. Taking a bank pass from Roy near the side boards, Frank catches the puck, pivots, and speeds in on a semi-breakaway, finishing the play with a great shot.
🚨 3-1 Washington Capitals. WSH Goal: Andrew Mangiapane (10). Assists: B. Duhaime (6), J. Carlson (24). Time: 14:54.
Great work from Duhaime in the corner. Mangiapane finds the back of the net on his backhand from the slot. Hard work goal I love it!
🚨 4-1 Washington Capitals. WSH Goal: Alex Ovechkin (20). Unassisted. Time: 19:01.
Ovi blocks a shot and scores on the empty net. That’s career goal number 873 for him. 21 away from Wayne.
Capitals win 4-1. Ethen Frank has his first career NHL game-winning goal. Nashville outshot Washington 33 to 16.
Ethen Frank’s game-winning first goal helps Caps beat Predators 4-1
