Spencer Carbery’s electric post-game speeches are certainly rousing enough, but now the players are introducing a prop to make wins even more fun.
Following the lead of past Capitals teams, the players will now name their own Player of the Game after victories.
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin made the announcement with his son Sergei after the team’s 4-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. And if we’re to believe Ovi, Sergei personally chose the first victor.
“Okay, I think yesterday, we obviously find the new stuff,” Ovi said, holding up a gold chain necklace around Sergei’s neck. “The best player in the game. I think it’s going to be a very important (award). And Sergei said, today’s (winner) is Bands A Make Her Dance.”
The whole team then began clapping, knowing that obviously, Bands A Make Her Dance, meant Jakob Chychrun was the victor. Ovechkin encouraged Sergei to give the gold chain to the defenseman, but he shook his head as if to say, ‘I’m not participating in this madness,’ so the Capitals captain handed the prize over himself.
“That’s it, boys,” Chychrun, who had a goal and two assists, said in his speech. “Thanks for getting a big win in me and Dew’s hometown here. This one feels good.”
Chychrun did get a high five from Ovi Jr for being the inaugural victor of the award. And when the six-year-old hockey prodigy came into the locker room, he made sure to give some dap to every Capitals player.
In the past, the Capitals have awarded an honest Abe beard and top hat, a big yellow rope, a literal shield and axe, and ninja headbands.
