The Pierre McGuire photo: where are they now?

Seven years ago today, RMNB threw a party at the Iron Horse (RIP 🪦) in DC. A great time was had by all, including, by coincidence, professional hockey person Pierre McGuire. By every account he was a delight, happily taking pictures with dozens of partygoers. This is one those photos:

In the intervening years, much has changed with the people in that photograph. Today we answer the question, Where are they now?

Ian

Ian Oland

Oh, you know. He’s still here, blogging harder and longer than anyone, DIY-style since 2009. He and Ashley had a son, Ethan, just a few months after the party. Now he serves as editor, a writer of real-time news, and sometimes does great reporting when we allow him to leave his house.

Reflecting on the photo, Ian says he held the beer in the photo intentionally “to look cool,” but “now, looking back, no prop could make that possible.” He regrets not being beside Pierre, but not because of his hockey celebrity. “Being on the edge of the photo made my already big face from thirty pounds ago look even wider.”

These days, Ian plays ball hockey and goes on a lot of hikes.

Peter

Peter Hassett

That’s me. I’m here too, writing about cold, hard stats and squishy feelings and rarely anything in between. The website relaunch almost killed me. I like gardening and I make a lot of music. My cat Fred is twenty years old.

Pierre McGuire

Pierre McGuire

For four years after this photo was taken, McGuire continued to serve as analyst for NBC Sports, who owned the NHL’s US rights up through 2021. That same year, the Ottawa Senators hired McGuire to be senior vice president of player development. At the time, general manager Pierre Dorian called the hiring a “no-brainer.” Ten months later, the Ottawa Senators fired him. The firing came soon after the death of owner Eugene Melnyk, who was reportedly the one who hired him.

(Speaking of firing McGuire, this 1994 story from the Hartford Currant remains a must-read. For me it’s an annual must-re-read.)

Not long after his firing, McGuire joined Sportsnet’s playoffs coverage. A year later he contributed to the NHL’s “Stanley Cup Central” show on YouTube, which featured Alexa Landestoy. Here’s a clip that shows off Pierre’s energy and charisma:

Pierre does a lot of video podcasts these days. He cohosts one that has two names, The Sick Podcast – The Eye Test. I don’t actually know what else he’s doing. I probably should have found that out before doing a “where are they now?” bit.

Chris

Chris Gordon

Chris contributed to RMNB through 2018. His last byline was about the Brooks Orpik buyout during his brief trade to Colorado. Remember that?

Chris is now Pentagon Editor for Air & Space Forces Magazine, so he’s been busy in a busy time for military matters. Chris texts me whenever there’s popular discourse about the Oxford comma, which he totally uses now.

Pat

Pat Holden

Pat contributed to RMNB through 2019, but he gave us a cameo in the fall, writing about our mutual fave, Nic Dowd.

Pat lives in the Baltimore area with wife Maria and two little ones, Sloane and Carmen. He’s excited about the Orioles getting Corbin Burnes. He’s on Bluesky and he still writes about hockey on his Substack, Pokechecked by Murphy.
