Tom Wilson and Logan Thompson will be headed back to Washington, DC, from the 2026 Winter Olympics, with hardware, but not the hardware they really wanted.

The two Capitals were awarded silver medals after Canada fell 2-1 in overtime to Team USA in the Olympic final on Sunday. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation, and the Americans got the Golden Goal from forward Jack Hughes just 1:41 into the extra frame.

Wilson set the physical tone early in the game, throwing a thunderous hit on Dylan Larkin early in the first period.

The 31-year-old winger started the game alongside the Florida Panthers duo of Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett on the newly-named “Fine Line.”

Wilson played 13:00 of ice time in the loss, failing to find the scoresheet. In six total games at the tournament, Wilson collected four points (1g, 3a), which was more than 13 other skaters on Canada’s roster. He also recorded 29 penalty minutes.

The only Canadian players to finish with more points than Wilson were Connor McDavid (13), Macklin Celebrini (10), Nathan MacKinnon (7), Sidney Crosby (6), Cale Makar (6), and Mitch Marner (5).

The Capitals’ alternate captain started the tournament as a surprise on Canada’s top line with McDavid and Celebrini. Wilson, who McDavid called a “forechecking god,” later notched his first Olympic point against Switzerland, his first Olympic goal and a Gordie Howe hat trick against France, and the assist on the game-tying goal in Canada’s semifinal win over Finland.

Thompson spent the majority of the tournament as Jordan Binnington‘s backup, starting just one game for the Canadians. In that game, a 5-1 win over Switzerland, Thompson made 24 saves, only allowing a power-play marker to Pius Suter.

By winning the silver medals, Wilson and Thompson became the first Capitals players to medal at the Olympics since Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson won silver for Sweden at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.
