Connor McDavid’s hat trick got all the headlines after the Edmonton Oilers’ 6-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, but one former Capital had himself a night too.
Alex Chiasson scored his first playoff goal and tallied his first playoff assist since the Capitals’ Stanley Cup run in 2018.
Chiasson’s unassisted goal came 8:05 into the third period to effectively put the game away for the Oilers. Chiasson grabbed James Neal’s trash near the crease and roofed the puck into the yawning net.

The 29-year-old forward, who plays on the Oilers’ powerplay, also assisted on McDavid’s hat trick goal.
The points were Chiasson’s first of the 2020 playoffs and as an Oiler.
Chiasson’s last postseason goal came on May 7, 2018, during Game Six of the Capitals’ second-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. After a chip-in by Jay Beagle, Nathan Walker sped to a loose puck, curled around the net, and found a wide-open Chiasson at the right circle for a one-timer. Chiasson beat Matt Murray to give the Capitals an early 1-0 lead.
The Capitals would go on to win in overtime via an Evgeny Kuznetsov breakaway goal, eliminating the Penguins and exorcising their demons.
Chiasson’s final playoff point for the Capitals was a gorgeous primary assist on a Devante Smith-Pelly goal in Game Two of the Eastern Conference Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning on May 13, 2018. Speeding down the wing, Chiasson sauced a pass to DSP for a one-timer, beating Andrei Vasilevskiy.
The Capitals would win this game 6-2 and take a 2-0 lead in the series.
Chiasson would play in Games Three and Five of the series before being taken out of the lineup. The Capitals would go on to win the Stanley Cup and Chiasson’s name would be engraved on it, one of a handful of current Oilers players to have that distinction.
