After reports surfaced Thursday that he was close to signing a deal in the KHL, former Capital Brendan Leipsic agreed to terms on a two-year contract with KHL CSKA Moscow on Friday. Leipsic’s agent, Sergey Isakov of Newport Sports Management, confirmed the news to Sport Express.
According to a report, Leipsic asked his agents to find him a team in Russia.
CSKA was the top team in the Tarasov Division last season before the coronavirus pandemic ended the postseason early. CSKA won the Gargarin Cup in 2018-19 and had made the KHL Finals three out of the last four seasons.
Leipsic was cut by the Capitals on May 8 after leaked screenshots showed the fourth-line forward making misogynistic comments towards women and calling his teammates “losers” in an Instagram group chat. Others who participated included Leipsic’s brother Jeremy, who was later kicked off the University of Manitoba’s hockey team, and Florida Panthers’ prospect Jack Rodewald.
Leipsic, 26, scored three goals and tallied 11 points in 61 games for the Capitals during the 2019-20 season.
On the same day, Oilers’ prospect defenseman Dmitri Samorukov, who spent all of last season in the AHL, has reportedly agreed to play with CSKA next season.
Samorukov´s agent to @MikhailZislis (@hockey_se): There is an agreement in place regarding Samorukov, who will play for CSKA next season. Oilers GM Ken Holland has approved the move, just the signature is needed. #NHL #KHL #HockeyTwitter https://t.co/DiyvP5yeWL
