“We are eagerly waiting for you 🥰🙌🏽,” Nastya wrote as translated by Igor Kleyner. She added the hashtags #ovechkinfamily #ovijr #ovechkin #pregnancy #secondbaby.
The Ovechkins already have a one-year-old son, Sergei, whom they named after Ovi’s older brother who tragically passed away when The Great 8 was young. The couple announced they were expecting their first child after the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018. He was born on August 18.
“I didn’t cry, but I was happy, you know?” Ovechkin said in an interview with RMNB. “I was crying when [Nastya] delivered, but it’s natural emotion. You don’t think you’re not gonna do it, but it just goes automatic. Most important thing is he’s healthy, everybody’s healthy, and everything is fine.”
Recently, Ovechkin took Sergei, now 18 months, out onto the ice with his Capitals teammates during practice. After scoring his 700th goal, the Russian machine gave Sergei his first pair of hockey gloves from equipment maker CCM. Sergei is learning how to stickhandle.
Sergei’s first word, according to Nastya, was “daddy.”
“Sasha has an incredible connection to his son,” Nastya said. “My husband has a lot of projects and business trips here, but he is constantly in touch with his son, and if he has even 30 minutes of free time, always comes to him. On the ice, Ovechkin is a beast, but at home he is gentle, kind, caring, he even learned how to change diapers while we were still in maternity ward.”
