‘It’s a little out of place’: Garnet Hathaway did his postgame interview with a broken, bleeding nose

Garnet Hathaway had himself a night.

He got blown up by a hit, fought a Rangers player, drew a penalty, and scored a goal.

After the game, the scrappy American was given the Capitals’ hard hat – a Washington Nationals’ batting helmet. As he conducted his postgame interview, blood eked out of his nose.

“Yeah it was broken,” Hathaway said to reporters.

Hathaway’s face got mangled after he got stood up in the offensive zone by Jacob Trouba during a physical second period.

“You’re looking right at my nose,” Hathaway awkwardly said to a reporter during NBC Sports Washington’s postgame show. “It’s a little out of place. That’s probably all I should say.”

And that’s fair. Hathaway’s rugged face and his play against the Rangers said everything there needed to be said. Signed to a four-year deal over the summer, the unheralded checking-line forward is quickly becoming a fan favorite for his gritty, throwback style.

After getting racked by Trouba in the second period, Hathaway and his swollen beak challenged the Rangers’ Brendan Smith to a fight the next period. Garnet needed to throw hands –with literally anyone he could find — after Micheal Haley charged Dmitry Orlov and tried to hit the Russian defenseman in the head.

Naturally, because the puck always finds the ones who play the game most honestly, Hathaway scored an empty-net goal in the final minute to put the cherry on top of the Caps’ 5-2 victory.

But naturally, he credited his teammates on the goal.

“Lars won the faceoff. We were in our structure and Hags made a great play on the wall,” Hathaway said.

#HockeyGuy of the night 💯

In summary: I freaking love this guy.

“He is a special guy in terms of his compete, his battle and his character is really high end,” Todd Reirden said after the game. “When you have a guy that has a broken nose and comes back and then gets into a fight and draws a penalty on which we score on the power play, and then ends up scoring an empty-netter, that’s how it should work out. For a sacrifice like that, if you’re willing to do those things, that’s what – to me – being a Washington Capital is all about.”
