Analysis

  • The standout of the entire game was 19-year-old defenseman, Martin Fehervary. The 2018 Caps second-round pick was operating on another level than everyone else as his time playing against men at the professional level in Sweden really shone brightly. In my opinion, he was the best skater on the ice by far, scored two goals, and was a menace for the Canes to deal with between the two blue lines.
  • Riley Sutter took a nasty fall into the boards at the start of the third period and immediately went to clutch his arm/shoulder/collarbone area. He left the game slowly under his own power and did not return.
  • Ilya Samsonov was in net and through two periods was only beaten once by a strange angle goal on the Canes 21st shot. The start of the third was a bit shakier for him as he allowed two more goals against, but all in all, he was pretty great. In the fun extra shootout after regulation, he was not scored on in five attempts from Canes shooters.
  • The Caps best forward line was the trio of Shane Gersich, Garrett Pilon, and Brett Leason. I don’t think they went a shift in the entire game without creating at least one high danger chance. I love the size, speed, and reach combination that Leason has. Gersich has a very dogged, Oshie-like presence (including a simple, nasty shootout snipe). Pilon was all over both ends of the ice and was my best overall forward of the afternoon.
  • I would be remiss to not mention the multi-point performance from Herndon, Virginia native Joe Snively. Same goes for the stellar day from Brian Pinho and some flashes of brilliance from the hulking Aliaksei Protas.
  • On the defensive side of things, I also really liked Bobby Nardella who reminds me a lot of Nate Schmidt and the Latvian Kristofers Bindulis.
  • My final takeaway is that Hershey is going to be quite the energetic, fast, exciting, youthful bunch when a lot of these guys get into the lineup this season. Holy smokes are there some absolute rambunctious speed demons in the Caps system.
