Nicklas Backstrom returned to home ice on Monday and now there’s another veteran Capital en route to DC.
Early Tuesday morning around 4 AM, Michal Kempny jumped on a flight in Prague, Czech Republic and started his long flight back to Washington.
His girlfriend Nicola published video holding the Capitals defenseman’s hand.

Once he arrives at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, Kempny will join star players like Evgeny Kuznetsov, John Carlson, TJ Oshie, and Lars Eller who have all began training early in DC for the 2019-20 season along with strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish.
Kempny spent most of the offseason rehabbing a torn left hamstring, which he suffered during a March 20 game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
On crutches during the team’s White House visit, Kempny was aggressive about recovering as quickly as possible, turning to cryotherapy for his rehab. During an early July trip to Croatia, Kempny said he was “getting stronger everyday.”
On July 23, the blueliner ran the steps of DRFG Arena – the home of his former Czech league team, HC Kometa Brno – showing off just how far he has come with his injured leg.
Capitals training camp begins on September 12 and if all goes well, Kempny will be at or near 100 percent.
