The Washington Capitals will visit President Donald Trump and the White House on Monday, March 25. This news was broken on Tuesday by Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post.

The White House visit follows months of delay and controversy following the team’s 2018 Stanley Cup championship.

In June, ex-Caps/current Bears forward Devante Smith-Pelly expressed his intention to refuse an appearance with Trump, who has been credibly accused of sexual assault and misconduct by more than a dozen women, including his ex-wife, and declined to condemn a white supremacist rally in which a non-violent counter-protester was murdered.

In August, Brett Connolly joined Smith-Pelly in stating he would not visit the president, who has ordered the imprisonment of children seeking asylum from war-torn central American countries and who has proposed a $3.5 billion budget cut for infant and child nutrition.

In October, Owner Ted Leonsis expressed his intent to join the team should they choose to visit the president, who once took out a full-page ad in four New York newspapers advocating for the death penalty against five minors falsely accused of committing a crime and maintained his belief that they were guilty long after their convictions were vacated.

In the fall of 2017, the president rescinded an invitation to the then-champion Golden State Warriors, many of whom had already stated they would not appear with Trump, whose campaign chair is now a convicted felon facing additional charges of obstruction of justice and witness tampering and yet reportedly was placing political appointees in the administration as late as January 2017. Several days later, the then-champion Pittsburgh Penguins announced they would indeed visit Trump, who appointed Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor despite warnings that the former general had inappropriate and undisclosed communications with international figures, including entertaining an offer of $15 million from Turkey to illegally secret away a US-based cleric critical of Erdogan. In October 2017 the Penguins made their appearance with Trump, whose approval rating is approximately equal to that of Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

In January 2019, the champion Clemson Tigers football team ate fast food provided by Trump, who previously sought to deny emergency relief funding to Americans in Puerto Rico following a ruinous and deadly hurricane so that it could be spent instead on Americans in Texas and Florida.
