Good response, bad result: Stars beat Caps 2-1

The Capitals put forth a sucky effort one night ago in St. Louis, and through twenty minutes in Dallas it looked like they were due for a repeat performance. But the Caps climbed back in the final two periods, forcing the game to overtime. There they received a bad result from a very good response.

Tyler Seguin slotted one home on the power play to give the Stars an early lead. Lars Eller tied things up with a goal in the second, and we headed to the third that way.  Seguin’s second goal of the night won it in overtime.

Stars beat Caps 2-1 in overtime.

  • The Caps started the first well and then a couple penalties seemed to totally derail their efforts. They got scored on and then seemingly fell apart, much like they did against St. Louis in the third period Thursday night. Pretty much everybody and their mother got smushed at five-on-five. It got ugly really everywhere but the score sheet.
  • Me and Peter both agree that the current line combinations are probably less than ideal. I had been wanting a shift in the lines, but I don’t think these are what I’d go with exactly. It would help if Evgeny Kuznetsov wasn’t getting pulverized with really any set of forwards this season.
  • Newsflash: power play is still struggling. One for their last 27, but some good signs in this game. I put out a call on Twitter for songs to summarize the current state of the man advantage unit. Go check out the replies if you need a good cry song.
  • I’m negative when the Caps are negative, so I have to be positive when they are positive. The second period was a fantastic response, they dominated all facets of the game (out-chancing Dallas 10 to 2) and all three zones on the very poorly surfaced ice. Most importantly though, they went into the third period tied on the scoreboard.
  • For some reason, Andre Burakovsky owns the Dallas Stars. His assist on Lars Eller‘s goal was his first since November 23 and he was probably the Caps best forward in terms of moving his feet and getting the puck to good areas. Burky now has nine points in nine games against the Stars in his career.
  • Eller’s goal not only tied the game, but it also tied him with Jannik Hansen at 109 career goals which is good for third all time from a Danish player. Mikkel Boedker has 114 and Frans Nielsen has 159.
  • Michal Kempny has never embellished a thing in his life. How dare those officials insinuate that those thighs are potentially fake.

  • Ian’s son Ethan tried to say “RMNB” tonight and according to Ian it came out “RRRR O O UGH”. Close enough, give him the points.
  • Alan May really hated the ice tonight.
  • I don’t think Jonas Siegenthaler should leave the lineup again if he’s healthy this season.

  • Third period was more of the same from the second. Caps dominated, just couldn’t get the winning strike in regulation. Still haven’t done so in Dallas since October 17, 1995.
  • Anton Khudobin was all three stars of the game. Robbed the Caps of two points.

Next up for the Caps is a trip to the Red Wings pizza palace for a weird Sunday evening start time. It’s time to string a few Ws together.
