Ahead of the Capitals’ matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, Alex Ovechkin continued to live up to his reputation as one of the most giving athletes in sports by making a fan’s 18th birthday super special.
The fan, who was holding a sign that read It’s My 18th Birthday – Can I Get A Puck?, was shocked when Ovi obliged, tossing one over the glass during warmups.
She was visibly brought to tears by the gesture, as her dad wrapped her up in a big hug.
Watch as the girl puts her hand over her heart when she sees what’s happening.
And now the adorable waterworks. Best. Birthday. Gift. Ever.
We later learned in the telecast that the girl’s name was Meredith. Her birthday is Friday December 28, and Thursday’s matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes was the first Caps game she ever attended. Her father drove her up from Virginia Beach.
“My mind was completely blank actually,” Meredith said in an interview with NBC Sports Washington’s Rob Carlin. “It was complete excitement. I never expected Ovi would do that. It was really awesome and I am so thankful for it.”
Meredith added that “when it did happen I got very emotional.”
Yes, she did.
Earlier this season, Ovechkin tossed a fan a puck before scoring a hat trick and gave sticks to two (1, 2) very deserving fans.
Ovi really is the gift that keeps on giving this holiday season.
