The Washington Capitals took down the Carolina Hurricanes in both teams’ first game back from their short Christmas break. The Caps two goal second period powered them to an eventual 3-1 victory over their Metro division foe.
The Caps out-shot the Canes 33 to 29, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 49 to 41.

Carolina Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov got a goaltending interference call against the Capitals in the second period, but the 18-year-old doubled his pleasure as he attempted to step out of the penalty box.

With the high holidays nearly over, the Washington Capitals returned to action on Thursday, playing host to the Carolina Hurricanes, who are not great. The game was quiet until late, when it got dangerous.
After a scoreless first, the Caps got on board twice in the second period — first with Chandler Stephenson exploiting a turnover forced by Smith-Pelly, then with TJ Oshie deflecting John Carlson’s shot on the power play.
Matt Niskanen left the game in the third period and shortly thereafter Sebastian Aho cracked Braden Holtby’s shutout bid. The Canes pulled Petr Mrazek late and John Carlson punished them for it, scoring an empty-netter instantly.

In the third period of Thursday’s Caps-Canes game, Matt Niskanen was apparently injured in a boarding-like collision with Clark Bishop and Justin Williams.
It was an awful and scary hit, but Niskanen was able to walk off the ice on his own.

Ahead of the Capitals’ matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, Alex Ovechkin continued to live up to his reputation as one of the most giving athletes in sports by making a fan’s 18th birthday super special.
The fan, who was holding a sign that read It’s My 18th Birthday – Can I Get A Puck?, was shocked when Ovi obliged, tossing one over the glass during warmups.
She was visibly brought to tears by the gesture, as her dad wrapped her up in a big hug.
