DuClaw is releasing a new beer called Cup Stand. It’s inspired by the Capitals’ Stanley Cup championship.

The Washington Capitals’ euphoric Stanley Cup championship victory in June inspired hundreds of thousands of local fans to gather at the National Mall for the team’s parade. Since then, there have been Stanley Cup bobbleheads, wine, buckets, pig races, and corn mazes made in tribute.

The latest salute comes in beer form.

In collaboration with local beer shop Downtown Crown, DuClaw Brewing Co., located in Baltimore, MD, is releasing a new pilsner entitled Cup Stand. Featuring a silhouetted Alex Ovechkin doing a Cup Stand on top of the Stanley Cup, the logo utilizes navy blue and white stars from the Capitals’ third jerseys.

The beer will be sold exclusively in cans and on draft at Downtown Crown Wine and Beer in Gaithersburg and Georgetown Square Wine and Beer in Bethesda starting Thursday, December 13.

According to a marketing sheet from DuClaw, the light-gold beer is “slightly bitter, but well-balanced.” It uses hops of apollo, centennial, simcoe, and citra while using grains of pilsner malt, caramel pils, & torrified wheat. The beer has an ABV of 5 percent.

Arash Tafakor of Downtown Crown Wine and Beer, one of the people behind the DuClaw’s latest pilsner, told us more of the backstory in an email.

So our crew at Downtown Crown Wine and Beer are huge Caps fans and wanted to brew a beer with a local brewery to celebrate the Caps winning the Stanley Cup. Also their incredible celebration afterward. We approached DuClaw brewery right outside of Baltimore with the idea and they were equally enthusiastic to be a part of it.

We decided to brew a German Style Pilsner that is super drinkable. Its purpose is for fans to enjoy a few while watching the Caps go for the repeat. We also brewed it with local beer leagues in mind. I personally play in two leagues in the area and both teams love to drink a few after our beer league games.

We came up with the name right after the NHL decided to ban teams from ever doing Cup Stands again. The image of Ovechkin doing a cup stand was an easy and right choice.

We will post on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DowntownCrown/ as soon as the beer is delivered Thursday.

RMNB was first tipped off about the new Capitals-inspired beer by readers Jenn, Karen, and Pat, who got a private brewery tour at DuClaw’s on Saturday.

S/T to Gene Wu for the heads up on the Cup Stand marketing sheet.

RMNB is not associated with the Washington Capitals; Monumental Sports, the NHLPA, the NHL, or its properties. Not even a little bit.
