The Washington Capitals hosted the Edmonton Oilers at Capital One Arena this evening. The Capitals put an end to the possibility of a three-game losing streak.

Two key assists from the return of Travis Boyd opened the game up with a Capitals lead at 2-0. After a quick Connor McDavid goal and first intermission, the game started back up with a TJ Oshie goal and an amazing spinning assist from Nicklas Backstrom. A quick goal from Leon Draisaitl and a money shot from the office of Alex Ovechkin would bring the score to 4-2 heading into the third period.

The third remained scoreless. A calm, winning ending is exactly what we all needed.

    Caps beat Oilers 4-2.

    • Jakub Vrana might have been taken off the first line, but was quick to make his presence known tonight after scoring a quick one-timer goal to get the game moving.
    • Devante Smith-Pelly was soon to follow with a goal 5:44 into the first period to bring the Capitals up 2-0. Connor McDavid scored one for Edmonton a few minutes later, but we don’t need to get into that.
    • Welcome back, Travis Boyd! Boyd came back into the lineup this evening after healing an injury from training camp. Boyd had two assists in three minutes as the Capitals took the lead 2-1 into the first intermission.
    • I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to all the green bean casserole lovers that I upset this evening:

    • The second period opened with a great goal from TJ Oshie, but more importantly a gorgeous, spinning assist from Nicklas Backstrom. When I say “gorgeous”….I seriously mean it.
    • TJ Oshie has now registered seven goals this season and the Capitals are now 5-0-1 when Oshie scores a goal. Needless to say, this goal felt very good.
    • On the topic of amazing spin moves:

    • Is it really a successful Capitals win if Alex Ovechkin didn’t register a point from his hot spot?

Alex Ovechkin scores on the power play to put the Caps up 4-2. It’s Ovi’s 11th goal this season and 618th of his career. Ovi has 7 goals in his last 8 games. pic.twitter.com/gVGg8TncaN

    • Another great game from Phoenix Copley with a career high 31 saves and his second NHL win, but this was his first in regulation.

Way to go, team. We’ll meet all of you right back here after two sleeps when the Capitals host some team named the Pittsburgh Penguins.
