The Washington Capitals did not show up Thursday night in New Jersey against the Devils. The white clad bunch fell 6-0 and never looked competitive throughout the entire 60 minute slog.
The Devils out-shot the Caps 36 to 21 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 55 to 41.

- Look at that utter cyclone staring Pheonix Copley down all night. The Caps team defense was an utter joke. They basically laid a red carpet out for the Devils and no one was even checking their tickets on the way in. On the flip side, look at that cool tropical lagoon that Keith Kinkaid got to chill in all night. Was there even one scoring chance for the Caps that was a modicum of ‘get up out of your seat’ exciting?
- It’s incredibly telling when the only positive from your team in a 6-0 walloping is your goaltender. Copley was left out to dry and saved this game from being one of the most embarrassing losses in franchise history. He stopped 28 pucks and about half of those shots required ten bell effort to keep out.
- The Caps had one high danger chance at even strength through two periods compared to the Devils’ ten.
- The third line got relentlessly piled on and the first line was anything but effective in their own right. It’s time to end the Brett Connolly experiment and switch some of these forward combos up.
- With the scorching hot Toronto Maple Leafs upcoming next, the Caps better sort out some of these defensive issues real quick.
