Brooks Orpik bought out by the Colorado Avalanche, is now a free agent

Adrian Dater reports that the Colorado Avalanche have bought out the final year of defenseman Brooks Orpik‘s contract.

Heading into the final year of his five-year, $5.5 million AAV contract, Orpik was traded to the Avalanche along with Philipp Grubauer in exchange for a second-round pick. The Avalanche acknowledged their intention to buy out the contract immediately, and Orpik cleared waivers on Sunday. With the buyout finalized, Orpik, 37, is an unrestricted free agent.

Washington has stated their interest in re-signing Orpik on a new deal.
