Capitals recall Travis Boyd and Madison Bowey from Hershey

Tuesday evening, the Washington Capitals announced the promotions of Travis Boyd and Madison Bowey from the AHL Hershey Bears. The two players have both spent time in Washington this season and will likely finish the year on the Caps roster for the the team’s playoff run.

With Jay Beagle injured, Boyd could fill-in as the team’s fourth line center during the team’s final two regular season games. Meanwhile, Bowey could help spell several veteran defensemen and give them a rest before the playoffs. Bowey will be the team’s eighth defenseman on the roster.

The Hershey Bears, who play the rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight, have five games remaining in their season. They are already out of contention for the Calder Cup playoffs, missing the postseason for only the 13th time in their team’s history.

The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Travis Boyd and defenseman Madison Bowey from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Boyd, 24, has played in seven games for the Capitals this season after making his NHL debut against the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 4. Boyd recorded his first career point, a primary assist, against the Philadelphia Flyers on March 18. Boyd recorded 47 points (15g, 32a) in 61 games with Hershey this season, which ranks second on the Bears and is tied for 34th in the AHL. Additionally, the Hopkins, Minn. native’s 26 power play points (7g, 19a) leads the Bears. Boyd has recorded 15 multi-point games this season.

Last season, Boyd registered 63 points (16g, 47a) in 76 games with the Bears, setting career highs in points, assists and plus/minus (+19). The 5’11”, 185-pound forward led Hershey in points and assists and was named team MVP. In addition, he finished the season ranked tied for third in the AHL in assists and tied for sixth in points. Boyd was named to the AHL’s Second All-Star Team for the 2016-17 season and represented the Atlantic Division at the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic. Boyd has registered 165 points (53g, 112a) in 215 career AHL games with Hershey.

Drafted with the Capitals’ sixth-round pick in the 2011 draft, Boyd played in four seasons for the University of Minnesota and recorded 96 points (32g, 64a) in 148 collegiate games. Boyd won the Big Ten championship in the 2014-15 season and was named to the Big Ten’s Second All-Star Team. Additionally, Boyd won a gold medal for Team USA in the U-18 World Junior Championship in 2011.

Bowey, 22, made his NHL debut on Oct. 14 against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 6’2″, 198-pound defenseman recorded his first point, an assist, on Oct. 26 against the Vancouver Canucks. In 51 games this season, Bowey has 12 assists, tied for ninth among rookie defensemen. Bowey also has recorded two multi-assist games this season.

Bowey recorded eight points (2g, 6a) in nine games with Hershey this season and has a 0.89 points per game rating with the Bears, the highest rating among Bears defensemen. Bowey has recorded three multi-point games this season, including a two-goal game in Hershey’s 2-1 win against the Hartford Wolfpack on March 24.

In the 2016-17 season, Bowey recorded 14 points (3g, 11a) in 43 games. In the 2015-16 season, Bowey led all Bears defensemen in points (29) and assists (25), was named as Hershey’s Defenseman of the Year and won the John Travers/Steve Summers Award for the highest plus/minus on the team. In 113 career AHL games, Bowey has recorded 51 points (9g, 42a).

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was drafted by the Capitals with the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2013 draft. As a junior player with the Kelowna Rockets, a team he captained for two seasons, Bowey recorded 172 points (58g, 114a) in 259 games. In 2015, Bowey won the World Junior Championship with Team Canada and the Ed Chynoweth Cup as a WHL champion and was named as a First Team All Star in the WHL.
