Season series flop: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals laid an egg against their Metro Division rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers. Giveaways, odd man rushes, and defensive zone breakdowns doomed the Caps as Philipp Grubauer could not be superhuman enough to stem the tide.

The Flyers out-shot the Caps 35 to 28 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 51 to 43.

  • The Caps lost the season series to the Flyers, taking only one of the four games against them this season. They were outscored 14-5 in the two games in Philadelphia.
  • Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves on 34 shots. About 10 of those stops were of the spectacular variety, it’s just a shame the rest of his team left him out to dry.
  • John Carlson‘s 14th goal of the season not only gave him a new career high in goals in a single season, but also put him above Stars defenseman John Klingberg for the league lead in scoring by defensemen.
  • Travis Boyd‘s assist on Alex Ovechkin‘s 43rd goal of the season was his first NHL point. Congrats Travis!
