NHL 27, the latest installment in EA Sports’ hockey video game franchise, stirred up plenty of online chatter when players’ in-game faces were revealed.

The general consensus from the online community is that the resemblances weren’t really resemblin,’ something that Tom Wilson recently teased Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson about on his Instagram Story.

Wilson was also asked about Alex Ovechkin’s face scan by ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski at the NHL/NHLPA Player Media Tour in Las Vegas. Wilson’s response focused on whatever positives he could find.

“I think it looks really good,” Wilson told ESPN last week. “The salt-and-pepper hair, that’s accurate. I think that’s a good head of hair. We always admire his haircuts. He looks good. Nice tan. Good hair. Looks awesome.”

While that answer seems to reek of sarcasm, at least to me, Wilson is being truthful when he says the team admires Ovechkin’s haircuts.

The most recent example came last season when Wilson and former Capitals teammate Connor McMichael spoke to Ovi about it inside the Capitals tunnel before warmups.

Transcript

Tom Wilson: How much?

Alex Ovechkin: 70 bucks.

Tom Wilson: 70? It’s not free?

(Alex Ovechkin shakes his head)

Tom Wilson: Ovi still has to pay for haircuts? Crazy.

Connor McMichael: Does someone come to your house?

Alex Ovechkin: No.

Connor McMichael: You just walk right in a barber?

Alex Ovechkin: Yeah.

Tom Wilson: It was a good one this time.

While Wilson remained positive about the NHL 27 face scans, other players were not when speaking with Wyshynski.

“Good, I’m glad someone’s bringing this up. It’s horrible,” Frank Nazar said of Digi Frankie.

“It’s so crazy,” Matty Beniers said. “They can’t do me dirty like that. I mean, I have a touch of gray but that’s like a full head of hair. It’s like outrageous. I’ve had 45 people send me this and I’m like, ‘It’s not up to me.’ It’s tough.”

“I’ve seen some terrible ones. Some really bad ones,” Trevor Zegras said. “Like [Montreal Canadiens winger] Cole Caufield’s. It’s awful. I send it to him every day because it’s terrible.”

“I don’t know what happened there,” Caufield responded. “I look a little lost. I look like I need some sleep or some water. I don’t know. It’s tough.”
