Wednesday night, our Instagram account (@rmnb_blog) was tagged in a photo by readers Lara and Courtney. The two Caps fans’ shared their sign from pregame warmups and it was so fantastic I had to show you here.
Their sign reads: “Roses are red. Violets are blue. The Flyers SUCK and the Penguins DO TOO.” I love the emphasis on suck and do too. I also love that they were brazen enough to do this at Wells Fargo Center.
Meanwhile one of the friends is proudly holding up her Caps jersey to show off our Deadguins shirt underneath.
I’m sure they weren’t harassed by Flyers fans too much because of a story Ted Leonsis once shared to Barry Trotz during EPIX’s The Road To The Winter Classic.
“One of the best moments when we’re playing Pittsburgh [in the Winter Classic],” Leonsis said. “Pittsburgh fans in the past haven’t liked Caps fans and vice versa. There was this one section with a lot of Penguins fans – a lot of Caps fans [in the other]. And they were starting to argue with one another, but they realized it was like this special moment. Literally all of the sudden, the chant that started was Flyers suck! Flyers suck! It was like they bonded together over something.”
The two fan bases’ collective hate for the Penguins is greater than anything else.
