Caps senior writer Mike Vogel broke the news this morning that 24-year-old Capitals defenseman Patrick Wey will retire to pursue “educational interests” after suffering two concussions in less than a year.
In wake of back to back concussions, Patrick Wey has elected to retire and pursue educational interests. Great kid, wish him the best. #Caps

Wey started out with the AHL’s Hershey Bears in 2013-2014, playing in 28 games and getting called up by the Caps three times– in December, February, and March. But his stint in the big leagues was cut short after only nine games when goon Rich Clune outmatched Wey in a brutal and unnecessary fight on March 30, 2014.
The next October, Wey once again started the season with the Bears, but an ugly elbow from Lehigh Valley’s Jay Rosehill knocked Wey out of the season after only three games. (Rosehill earned himself a three-game suspension for the hit.)
When RMNB profiled Wey during the 2013 development camps, Wey compared his style of play to Karl Alzner, and cited both Scott Stevens and Rob Scuderi as players he tried to emulate.
“I need an opportunity to be competitive and fight for a spot and it’s good,” Wey said then of the competition he faced for a roster spot. “No matter where I am or what organization I am in, the sooner I have to fight for a spot and play my best, the better.”
Wey never really had a chance to show us what he was capable of. He was steady and looked to have the potential to be a quality NHL defender.
