Former Capitals Mathieu Perreault and Travis Boyd among 100-plus players placed on waivers

The NHL had one of the biggest waiver days in its history on Monday per The Athletic’s Thomas Drance.

With training camps so massively short due to the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season, teams opted to hold onto their plyers until the last possible waiver wire day, leading to over a 100-plus players being putting up for grabs. Nine Washington Capitals players were a part of that group highlighted by Pheonix Copley, Paul LaDue, and Shane Gersich.

Capitals place Tyler Graovac on waivers

Earlier Thursday morning, the Capitals re-assigned forward Travis Boyd to Hershey, with the intention that Andre Burakovsky will make his return to lineup Friday night against the New York Rangers. Moving Boyd and his $650,000 cap hit did not free up enough room to activate Burakovsky, whose hit is $3 million.

Late Thursday morning the team announced that they have placed forward Tyler Graovac on waivers. Removing Graovac and his $625,000 cap hit from the active roster gives the Caps enough space to activate Burakovsky.

The Capitals spent Monday visiting children at a local hospital. We’re not sure who had bigger smiles.

On Monday, the Capitals made their annual visit to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. The visit coincides with Hockey Fights Cancer month, an initiative that unites the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families.

Throughout the afternoon, the Capitals, wearing their lavender jerseys, interacted with children and their families while signing autographs and posing for photos.

“I think it’s important to give back,” John Carlson said to Monumental Sports Network’s Ben Brown. “When you set out on an initiative like Hockey Fights Cancer, you can’t just say it. You have to do it. It’s important to be there for people, and the kids who were in the unit I visited today really enjoyed having us there whether they were hockey fans or not. It’s all about being light and being fun and enjoying our time there.”

Capitals recall Tyler Graovac, place Christian Djoos on injured reserve

The Washington Capitals announced Friday morning that they recalled forward Tyler Graovac from his long-term conditioning stint with the Hershey Bears. Groavac had been on the suffering an upper-body injury during the October 17 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Caps loan Tyler Graovac to Hershey Bears

Tuesday morning the Capitals announced that they have loaned forward Tyler Graovac to their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears for a long-term conditioning stint. Graovac has been on injured reserve since suffering an upper-body injury during the October 17 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Capitals are getting healthier as Niskanen, Connolly, Bowey, and Graovac all practice

The Washington Capitals [furiously knocks on wood] are getting healthy.

Thursday morning, every injured Caps player skated during practice except injured forward Andre Burakovsky, who sat on the bench in street clothes anyway.

Capitals recall Anthony Peluso from Hershey, place Tyler Graovac on injured reserve

Friday afternoon, the Capitals already barren depth was exacerbated further when the team called up Anthony Peluso from AHL Hershey. The grinder will take Tyler Graovac’s roster spot and replace Brett Connolly who was injured Thursday night against Vancouver.

Peluso was signed by Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan as a free agent over the offseason. He has played three games for the Bears this year. He spent 142 games in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets between 2012 and 2016.

In a corresponding roster move, Tyler Graovac was placed on injured reserve. Graovac suffered an “upper body” injury on October 17 versus the Toronto Maple Leafs after receiving two hard checks to the shoulder by Toronto’s Matt Martin.

101 super adorable photos from the Capitals canine calendar photoshoot

On Monday, the Washington Capitals participated in their annual canine calendar photoshoot with Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Taking photos for the 2018 calendar, the Caps wore suits while the dogs dressed equally as fancy with bow ties and pearls. Some pups even wore, prepare yourself for this, scarfs.

Capitals players Nicklas Backstrom, Madison Bowey, Alex Chiasson, Christian Djoos, Tyler Graovac, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Aaron Ness, Dmitry Orlov, Devante Smith-Pelly, Jakub Vrana, Nathan Walker, and Tom Wilson were all photographed with dogs available for adoption through Homeward Trails. The dogs won’t be available for long after their day in the spotlight!

Jay Beagle, John Carlson, Taylor Chorney, Brett Connolly, Lars Eller, Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik, TJ Oshie, and Alex Ovechkin all posed with their own dogs.

Aside from the puppies (one of which Tyler Graovac tried to smuggle, or maybe even snuggle out in his pocket), Ovechkin’s two-year-old, 105-pound black lab Blake was definitely the star of the day.

While the official photos won’t be seen until the release of the calendar on November 20, we hope these adorable photos will hold you over until then.

Caps team picture at FBI Academy provides update on team injuries

The Capitals were the healthiest team in the league during the 2016-17 season with only 49-man games lost due to injury. That luck had to end at some point, and it appears it has early this season.

Matt Niskanen, who is arguably the Capitals’ top defenseman, was placed on long-term injured reserved last week, while Lars Eller missed last night’s game due to the flu. Eller’s replacement, Tyler Graovac, only made it through the first period last night.

Although specifics of Niskanen and Tyler Graovac’s upper-body injuries have not been released, the Capitals team photos from the FBI Academy Wednesday may have given us the tiniest of updates.
