Patric Hornqvist airs out (!) smelly hockey gear (!) on sunny driveway (!)

This week the Pittsburgh Penguins traded forward Patric Hornqvist to the Florida Panthers in exchange for defender Michael Matheson and forward Colton Sceviour. Hornqvist said he was “blindsided” by the deal. “It’s a tough situation for me and my family when you get blindsided a little bit,” Hornqvist told the media on Friday. “When you know you have a no-trade, you don’t think this kind of question is going to come up.”

Hornqvist had to waive his no-trade clause to agree to the deal.

In completely unrelated news (no, I’m serious, this really is not related) one intrepid citizen journalist shared a photo of Hornqvist’s driveway, reporting that “someone tossed [Hornqvist’s Penguins] gear out,” suggesting a public statement of rage from a scorned hockey boy.

Finally official: Penguins trade Patric Hornqvist to Panthers for Mike Matheson and Colton Sceviour

Reports surfaced on Wednesday that the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers were trading forward Patric Hornqvist for defenseman Mike Matheson, but official confirmation never came. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the deal was held up by Hornqvist’s no-trade clause and injury insurance.

Thursday afternoon, the two teams finally made the trade official. Forward Colton Sceviour will also join Matheson in Pittsburgh.

The Washington Nationals are taunting Pittsburgh sports fans with Patric Hornqvist’s no-goal

As the Washington Nationals started a new homestand, they played up a fellow DC rivalry. Both the Capitals and Nationals are playing the respective team from Pittsburgh and Monday night the Nats entertainment crew decided to have some fun.

During the seventh inning, the Pirates challenged a close play at second base. Up 3-2, Ryan Zimmerman hit a towering fly ball to the warning track. Shortstop Trea Turner tagged up at first and slid into second.

The watercooler moment of Game Two: Did the puck cross the line on Patric Hornqvist’s no-goal?

The Pittsburgh Penguins appeared to narrow the Capitals’ lead to one midway through the third period.

As Sidney Crosby attempted a wraparound, Patric Hornqvist crashed the net, knocking home – or so we thought – the rebound past Braden Holtby. While Hornqvist celebrated with his teammates, officials never ruled it a good goal on the ice.

After a lengthy goal review, the NHL decided that there was no evidence the puck ever crossed the goal line.

Patric Hornqvist blatantly trips Braden Holtby in the crease, no call

There are missed calls and then there’s this.

10:58 into the first period, Braden Holtby skated behind the net to stop a Penguins dump in. After leaving the puck for Kevin Shattenkirk, Holtby skated back to the crease. He was tripped by Patric Hornqvist. Blantantly.

Friendly fire: Conor Sheary leaves game after nasty collision with teammate

Penguins forward Connor Sheary left the game in the second period after a vicious collision with Penguins forward Patric Hornqvist.

Both players play for the hockey team, the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Where the craziness all started: Patric Hornqvist hits TJ Oshie in the face, no call (GIFs)

The Capitals looked to be in the driver’s seat after Justin Williams extended the team’s lead to 3-0 over the Penguins. Then referees Frederick L’Ecuyer and Dan O’Halloran missed an obvious penalty and everything went to hell.

Patric Hornqvist cross-checked forward TJ Oshie in the chin, causing the Caps forward to leave the game briefly. The officials missed it.

Tom Wilson Got a Roughing Penalty For Spinning Patric Hornqvist Around By The Neck

There’s a reason Adam Oates once called Tom Wilson a “man child.” While a skilled, baby-faced player, the 6’4″ Wilson has the penchant for hulking out (i.e. turning a metaphorical shade of green and smashing things) and showing a physicality that few in the NHL can match.

Wednesday, we saw another example of Wilson destroying things with ease. It happened after Jay Beagle took a shot on Marc-Andre Fleury and Wilson crashed the net. A melee ensued.

Then: WILSON! SMASH!!

Nashville Predators Pregame: Watching the Clock and Existentialism

The Pre Game: “And here’s my theory of punctuation. At the end of every sentence there should be a tiny clock that shows you how long it took you to write that sentence.” – Laurie Anderson.

Watching Capitals games is becoming an existential exercise, based on the obscene, neutered device we call the clock. As in: Caps score first by the clock: we lose. Caps trail in the second by the clock: we win. Watch the game, watch the clock; we score first, we lose last.

Call me crazy. Call me late for dinner, but consarnit, the Caps are just not behaving by the clock. Headline from Saturday: Caps Lose, Broadside of Barn Safe! What went wrong? Coach Juggles’ shoot-out changes? The Caps total lacking D? #BadSasha? #EvilSasha? #HailSatanSasha?

Here’s the thing: Caps, every time you take a lead and blow it, you smoke a tiny bit of our time. Think about that: every game you go forward at the first, only to surrender… you surrender a few minutes of our lives. The clock is ticking. What will you do with it?

Fancystats Crash the ESPN Mock Draft

As part of ESPN.com’s NHL family, I was invited to participate in their fantasy hockey draft this past Tuesday. Just me and guys like Craig Custance, John Buccigross, and Scott Cullen.

No pressure.

Victoria Matiash has already given a bird’s eye view of the draft, but I thought I would run through my thought process on various picks and give you some ideas for your fantasy draft. Plus, you can see how I do for the season because we are making the results public.

Here were the ground rules for the draft:

Participants included, in original order, Craig Custance, Tristan Cockcroft, Tim Kavanagh, John Buccigross, Pierre Becquey, Michael Hume, Victoria Matiash, Neil Greenberg, Sean Allen and Scott Cullen. Categories include goals, assists, power-play points, plus/minus, penalty minutes, shots on goal and average time on ice for skaters and wins, save percentage and goals-against average for goaltenders. Slots to fill include nine forwards, five defensemen, one “utility” skater, two goaltenders and a five-man bench.

My philosophy was simple: grab young, healthy, talented players with upside. Let others worry if Patrick Kane would be healthy or if Sergei Kostitsyn can once again score 20 goals on less than 100 shots.

I had the eight pick. With my editor Mike Hume drafting before me (he knows which players I fancy) and Cullen having back-to-back picks behind me I knew I had to make strategic decisions.
