Hershey Bears now carrying only two goaltenders after Mitchell Gibson returned to ECHL’s Stingrays

The Hershey Bears announced on Tuesday that they have returned rookie netminder Mitchell Gibson to the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays. Gibson was recalled by the team ahead of their three-game road trip earlier this month as Clay Stevenson was up in the NHL playing understudy to the Capitals’ Darcy Kuemper.

Gibson’s reassignment means Hershey is now carrying just two goaltenders. That could indicate that the recent injury that Capitals backup Charlie Lindgren suffered at practice on Monday will not see him miss any time as the Bears do not seem to be preparing for another recall of starter Hunter Shepard.

Ivan Miroshnichenko scores second career AHL goal in Hershey’s 3-2 (OT) win over Bridgeport

The Hershey Bears swept their weekend three-in-three after beating the Bridgeport Islanders 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.

Ivan Miroshnichenko scored his second goal with the Bears. The exceptional rookie now has three points in his first five AHL games. Mike Sgarbossa also celebrated his 600th pro game by scoring the overtime game-winning goal for his 200th career point.

Former Harvard goaltender Mitchell Gibson got the start for Hershey, playing in his first professional game today. The rookie made 21 saves to help secure the Bears win.

Hunter Shepard returns to Hershey Bears practice after missing team’s first two games, Mitchell Gibson summoned from Stingrays

The goaltending situation for the AHL’s Hershey Bears has been anything but stable to start the 2023-24 campaign.

Hunter Shepard, the 2023 Calder Cup playoffs MVP and regular number one netminder, has missed the team’s first two games of the season with an illness.

Shepard’s absence has been compounded by the Washington Capitals having their own issues in net in the NHL. Darcy Kuemper missed Opening Night due to the birth of his first child and Charlie Lindgren suffered an injury right before the Capitals’ second game.

All of that has meant Clay Stevenson, Shepard’s expected backup this year, has been ferried back and forth between the two teams on an almost daily basis.

The Bears got some good news on Wednesday though as Shepard returned to the ice for practice.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel and five others clear waivers, will report to Hershey Bears

The Washington Capitals placed forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel on waivers Friday as part of the trimming of their Training Camp roster to 27 players. NAK was one of six names waived for the purposes of being sent to the club’s AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday that Aube-Kubel along with Joe Snively, Hunter Shepard, Dylan McIlrath, Alex Limoges, and Michael Sgarbossa all cleared waivers.

Capitals send goaltender Clay Stevenson down to Hershey Bears, recall Mitchell Gibson

The Washington Capitals made several Training Camp roster moves on Friday. The team announced that they have loaned goaltender Clay Stevenson to the Hershey Bears and recalled Mitchell Gibson in his place.

Gibson was initially cut by the Caps earlier this week and played half of Hershey’s first preseason tilt against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday.

The Caps made similar moves on Thursday when they recalled Riley Sutter, Ethen Frank, and Chase Priskie to play against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Capitals Rookie Camp at the US Naval Academy in photos

Annapolis, MD — The Washington Capitals held their final day of Rookie Camp at McMullen Hockey Arena on Tuesday.

Top prospects like Ivan Miroshnichenko, Hendrix Lapierre, Vincent Iorio, Alexander Suzdalev, and Andrew Cristall participated in the four-day event, which saw the young stars not only work on their on-ice skills, but team-build off of it at the US Naval Academy.

Capitals re-assign Garin Bjorklund to Hershey, Mitchell Gibson released from amateur tryout agreement

The Washington Capitals announced on Monday that have re-assigned goaltender Garin Bjorklund to the AHL’s Hershey Bears. Additionally, the Bears released goaltender Mitchell Gibson from his amateur tryout agreement.

The news comes as Hershey awaits their first opponent of the Calder Cup Playoffs after securing a first-round bye with their 97-point, second-place Eastern Conference finish. That series will start during the final week of April.

Hershey Bears sign Capitals prospects Dru Krebs and Mitchell Gibson to amateur tryout agreements

The Hershey Bears announced on Monday that they have signed Capitals prospects Dru Krebs and Mitchell Gibson to amateur tryout agreements. The deals will allow them to finish the 2022-23 season in the AHL.

They join European forward prospects Bogdan Trineyev and Ludwig Persson who were assigned to the Bears after their respective seasons in Russia and Sweden ended. They will all be, in effect, Hershey’s black aces for their upcoming Calder Cup Playoffs run.

Capitals officially announce signing of goaltender Mitchell Gibson to one-year, entry-level contract

The Washington Capitals announced that they signed 2018 fourth-round draft pick, Mitchell Gibson, to a one-year, entry-level contract. The deal will pay Gibson $867,500.

The contract has been rumored for weeks and was reportedly already agreed to on March 28 before special circumstances changed the situation.

Mitchell Gibson to serve as Capitals backup goaltender against Rangers

The Washington Capitals announced some surprising news on Sunday morning before their matinee matchup with the New York Rangers. Prospect goaltender Mitchell Gibson has signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Caps and will serve as Darcy Kuemper’s backup against their Metropolitan Division foes.

The move was precipitated by regular backup Charlie Lindgren coming down with an illness and being unable to dress. Lindgren missed the team’s practice on Saturday.
