Joe Beninati wins two Emmys, including for ‘Best Sports Play-By-Play Announcer’

NBC Sports Washington’s Joe Beninati is going to need to buy a new china cabinet because he can’t stop winning trophies.

The popular play-by-play announcer took home two Emmys for his superb working calling Washington Capitals games.

“Saturday night @CapitalEmmys turned out to be two times the fun!” Beninati wrote on Twitter. “I am very grateful to work closely with so many talented people connected to @NBCSWashington and the @Capitals. They give us great stories to describe every year and 2018 was obviously special!”

Joe Beninati nominated for two Capital Emmy Awards, including ‘Best Sports Play-By-Play Announcer’

Capitals’ play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati may be going home with some more hardware at the 61st Capital Emmy Awards. Beninati, who has won 12 Emmy Awards previously, is nominated for two more awards, including Sports Play-by-Play announcer and Sports Event/Game-Live/Unedited.

The 61st Capital Emmy Awards will take place on June 22nd at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. A live stream will be available on the Capital Emmy’s website.

Beninati has been calling Capitals games on TV since 1994 and has been covering the team together with Craig Laughlin for 25 years.

Tom Boswell elected to National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame, Joe Beninati voted DC Sportscaster of the Year

Veteran Washington Post sportswriter Tom Boswell has been elected to the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame. Boswell joins North Carolina sportscaster Woody Durham, Real Sports host and sports journalist Bryant Gumbel, and legendary basketball writer Dick Weiss in the 2018 class of the NSMA Hall of Fame.

Capitals play-by-play man Joe Beninati was also named DC Sportscaster of the Year by the NSMA. This is the second time he has won the award.

Joe Beninati’s calling the Nebraska vs. Arkansas State game on the Big Ten Network

We may be less than six weeks away from regular season hockey, but we’ve already got our first Joe B Suit of the Night for September.

CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Joe Beninati was in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Saturday night to do play-by-play for the Big Ten Network. Beninati was calling the Nebraska/Arkansas State game at Memorial Stadium.

Did Beninati do a good job? Well how about you listen to his call of this 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and tell me yourself.

Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati wins two Emmys

CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Joe Beninati, who is the best, was once again declared the best by his peers during the 59th Capital Emmy Awards. Held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, the Capitals play-by-play announcer took home two Emmy awards for his work during the 2016 calendar year: Best Sports Play-by-Play Announcer and Best Sports Event/Game – Live/Unedited.

The sublimely dressed Beninati wore a black tuxedo along with a white dress shirt and fancy bow tie.

All of Joe Beninati’s suits from the 2016-17 season

On Sunday, the Washington Capitals defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime, ending their first-round series in six games. While the result was thrilling, there was a sad side effect for Caps fans. All remaining Capitals playoff games will be broadcast on national television, meaning that CSN’s play-by-play man Joe Beninati and analyst Craig Laughlin will no longer be calling games.

Beninati and Laughlin are a vital part of Caps culture. They bring professionalism and personality to telecasts. Their chemistry is second to none.

What could go wrong when Craig Laughlin wields a t-shirt gun: apparently everything

Thursday night, CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin moved from their friendly confines up in the press box and called the Caps-Preds game from the top of section 110. The commentators got very interactive with fans.

Joe B. and Locker signed autographs and posed for photos. Locker even gave one fan a fist-bump during the live telecast.

Late in the second period, Locker even attempted to fulfill a longtime dream: operate Slashot’s t-shirt gun and fire souvenirs to fans. But like the Caps performance on the ice, the moment, for whatever ungodly reason, just fell flat.

Joe Beninati, Craig Laughlin, and John Walton visit Wheel of Fortune set, hang out with Pat Sajak and Vanna White

Friday afternoon, longtime Capitals season-ticket holder Pat Sajak invited the Caps’ commentary crew to the Wheel of Fortune set in Culver City, Calfornia.

Joe Beninati, Craig Laughlin, and John Walton toured Stage 11 at Sony Pictures Studios. They also hung out with the show’s hosts, Sajak and Vanna White. The voices of the Caps also posted in front of the Wheel of Fortune board where the producers of the show put up the phrases of “Let’s Go Caps” and Craig Laughlin’s signature line of “Hold It Here.”

Sajak has hosted Wheel of Fortune for 36 years and earned three Emmy Awards, a People’s Choice Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The host lives in Severna Park, Maryland, and frequents hockey games at both Verizon Center and Staples Center.
