Capitals sign former draft pick Chase Priskie to one-year, two-way contract

The Washington Capitals are continuing to restock their organization with quality depth as they announced on Wednesday that they have signed defenseman Chase Priskie to a one-year, two-way contract. Priskie, once a Hobey Baker Award nominee, was originally a Caps draft pick in 2016 but chose not to sign with the team out of Quinnipiac University.

Priskie has spent the majority of his professional career playing in the AHL, most recently starring for the San Diego Gulls at the end of the 2022-23 season. In 16 games for San Diego, he recorded 13 points (7g, 6a) from the backend.

His new contract with the Caps will see him make a guaranteed $350,000. He’ll be paid $775k at the NHL level and $350k with the Bears.

Capitals draft pick Chase Priskie set to make NHL debut against former team with Florida Panthers

Washington Capitals draft pick, defenseman Chase Priskie will be making his NHL debut Thursday night with the Panthers. He will be doing so against the team that drafted him.

Priskie was drafted in the sixth round in 2016 and notably did not sign with the Capitals after his college career with Quinnipac.

Instead, he became a free agent and signed an entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

He was later traded to Florida in a deal that saw Vincent Trocheck go to the Hurricanes.

Former Capitals prospect Chase Priskie signs with Carolina Hurricanes

Former Capitals prospect Chase Priskie has signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, the team announced on Saturday. The deal has an average annual annual value of $925,000.

In April, Priskie informed the Capitals that he would not sign with Washington, electing instead to test the free agency waters.

Report: Capitals in talks to trade Chase Priskie’s rights to Carolina Hurricanes

In potential trade news, the Carolina Hurricanes are close to moving defenseman Justin Faulk to an unknown NHL team. In a separate move, they may also be looking to replace him by acquiring the rights of unsigned Capitals draft pick Chase Priskie.

The Capitals own Priskie’s rights until August 15.

The news was first reported by The Athletic’s Sara Civian who is a beat reporter for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Draft pick Chase Priskie informs Capitals he will not sign with them

Promising Capitals draft pick Chase Priskie has informed Washington that he will not be signing with the team. The defenseman was drafted in 2016 with the Capitals sixth-round pick and has been a standout star for the Quinnipiac Bobcats.

The news was first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

With this decision, Priskie will instead become a free agent on August 15 where any NHL team can sign him.

Chase Priskie named Hobey Baker Award finalist amid speculation on his future with Capitals

For the Quinnipiac Bobcats, two losses to Brown in the ECAC tournament quarterfinals have them awaiting their opponent in the NCAA tournament.

But there might be hardware for captain Chase Priskie to pick up as he closes out his senior season.

The 2016 sixth-round Caps prospect — another steal by the Capitals’ scouting staff — was named a Top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in college hockey, Wednesday.

On Wednesday the nominees for the NCAA’s most valuable hockey player, the Hobey Baker Award, were announced. A Capitals prospect is among them.

Chase Priskie, who plays for the Quinnipiac Bobcats, is one of 81 players up to receive the award.

Photos from the Capitals Development Camp scrimmage

During the final week of June 2018, Capitals prospects arrived from around the globe to participate in the team’s annual Development Camp at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Doing everything from drills, team-bonding, training, and scrimmaging, the week is a great way for the prospects to start to learn what it takes to make it in the NHL.

On Saturday, the 31 prospects, which include Shane Gersich and future goaltender Ilya Samsonov, took on each other in a friendly scrimmage. Check out our photos below.

Capitals 2016 Development Camp in Photos

The Washington Capitals hosted their annual development camp for prospects two weeks earlier this year – arguably the busiest week of the offseason – to better accommodate prospects’ demanding schedules over the summer.

Three days after the 2016 NHL Draft, Caps prospects, which included the likes of top prospects Madison Bowey and Riley Barber as well as every pick from the 2015 and 2016 drafts, took the ice. The prospects learned system play and did drills to allow the front office to evaluate their skills and get baseline numbers. The prospects also participated in off-ice programs to learn what it takes to be a professional in the league. There was also a team-building rowing event held near Georgetown.

Lost in the headlines of qualifying offers, huge trades, and the first day of free agency, talented 2015 first-round pick Ilya Samsonov made his Caps debut, working feverishly with legendary goalie coach Mitch Korn. “[Camp] was really hard,” Samsonov said through a translator. “So many shots.” Forward Stan Galiev even made an appearance several days to help translate. Over the next year, the culture-shocked Samsonov, who only knows a handful of English words, will Skype once a week with Barry Trotz’s son Tyson, to better learn the language and communicate with coaches.

On Saturday, Caps Development Camp concluded with a scrimmage in front of a mostly full Kettler Capitals Iceplex, where Team White picked up a fun, but insignificant win.

That’s because, as the prospects know all too well, the real games and real tests are to come. Only a handful will suit up for the Washington Capitals someday.

A Closer Look at the Six Selections the Caps Made on the Second Day of 2016 NHL Draft

A day after drafting talented defenseman Lucas Johansen with their first round pick, the Washington Capitals made six other selections on Day Two, including two picks two spots apart in the fifth round.

“The theme this year was to get intelligent players that work hard and can skate,” Assistant General Manager Ross Mahoney said to reporters after the Draft concluded. “We’re really happy with the results we got. Moving back and picking up an extra pick and still getting the person we want in the first round. Plus getting that extra pick so that was good because we were down a few picks after some of the trades that have taken place. Very happy with that.”

The Washington Capitals selected center Garrett Pilon in the third round, left wing Damien Riat in the fourth, left wings Beck Malenstyn and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby in the fifth, defenseman Chase Priskie in the sixth, and defenseman Dmitriy Zaitsev in the seventh. Below, we profile each player.
