EA Sports releases NHL 22 trailer, reveals Auston Matthews cover athlete second time in three years

EA Sports went live with a trailer for its latest NHL franchise game, NHL 22, on Thursday. The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews is the cover boy for the second time in three seasons (a questionable decision, but perhaps the mustache made them think he is a different person?).

The game is set to be released on October 15, 2021, and will be available on PS5 & PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One consoles. It can be purchased for preorder now.

Alex Ovechkin was the NHL’s cover athlete last year.

Two of the finalists for the NHL’s ‘gentlemanly conduct’ award have either been arrested or charged with a crime

In one of the most mind-numbing votes in NHL Awards history since Ovi was put on an end-of-season All-Star Team twice, the Professional Hockey Writers Association has voted Auston Matthews and Ryan O’Reilly as two of the three finalists for the 2019-20 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.

The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is awarded “to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.” The emphasis on gentlemanly conduct is mine.

Matthews was charged with a crime before the season, which really should have disqualified him, while O’Reilly was once arrested for drunk driving into a Tim Horton’s.

Report: Auston Matthews tests positive for coronavirus

The Toronto Sun’s Steve Simmons (yes, the hot dog guy) is reporting that Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews has tested positive for COVID-19.

The news comes on the same day that the Tampa Bay Lightning had to shutter their practice facility due to five players and staff members having positive tests as well.

These NHL players have spoken out about racism and the death of George Floyd

George Floyd died on May 25, after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. His death has sparked sorrow and protests across the country, demanding meaningful change. While many high-profile athletes have shared their opinions on the event, including LeBron James and Colin Kaepernick, the NHL has been relatively quiet.

Two Black players, JT Brown and Evander Kane, were the first to speak up. In an interview with ESPN’s First Take, Kane called on other high profile athletes “like Tom Brady and Sidney Crosby” to do something.

“We need so many more athletes–that don’t look like me–speaking out about this,” he said, “having the same amount of outrage that I have inside, and using that to voice their opinion, to voice their frustration, because that’s the only way it’s going to change.”

Since that time, more NHL players–both white and Black–have added their voices to the call for change. Here’s who they are and what they had to say.

A joking Alex Ovechkin on how Auston Matthews can improve defensively: ‘Call Dale Hunter’

Until winning a Stanley Cup, Alex Ovechkin was a lightning rod for criticism. National analysts looked for anything to explain the Capitals’ postseason flameouts from criticizing Ovechkin’s plus-minus and defense to the way he celebrated goals.

Now, an old wise hockey man with a very large Stanley Cup ring, Ovechkin was asked how Auston Matthews could become a better defensive player.

Auston Matthews thinks Justin Bieber is going to be at the Caps-Leafs game tonight

Four nights after having the biggest comeback win in team history, the Washington Capitals will play hockey again and they may have a very famous guest in the stands to watch.

Tuesday after the Leafs’ morning skate, Auston Matthews said he believes Justin Bieber will be at Scotiabank Arena for the game.

Why the Auston Matthews story is so upsetting to so many people, including me

This post contains discussion of sexual harassment, assault, trauma, and other related topics surrounding the incident involving Auston Matthews.

A few days ago, news broke that Leafs center Auston Matthews, along with a group of men, had attempted to get into the car of a woman who was by herself, at night, because they thought it would be funny to “see how she would react.”

This hit so close to an incident that happened to me that it sent me into a spiral of reliving that night, and the year and a half of investigations, court dates, and sheer terror that followed, over and over again. To say that the last few days have been difficult would be an understatement.

Many will see what Matthews did as negligible: a young man, drunk in his off-season, doing things that young men often do. It was just a joke, after all. No harm was meant by it. But in reality, they were testing the boundaries of what it is feasible to get away with. From there, it grows.

Auston Matthews addresses disorderly conduct charge with weak statement

Auston Matthews spoke to the media for approximately 40 seconds on Wednesday after revelations were made public that he was charged with disorderly conduct in his hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona. The hockey star and a group of friends tried to force their way into a female security guard’s car around 2 AM on May 26. As he walked away, Matthews “dropped his pants, bent over, and grabbed his buttocks” towards the woman.

On Wednesday, a visibly uncomfortable Matthews said he had “regret” for how it impacted the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Report: Auston Matthews ‘dropped his pants, bent over, and grabbed his buttocks’ towards female security guard

Auston Matthews, the cover boy for NHL 20, is in some hot water with the city of Scottsdale after being charged with disorderly conduct on May 26. Matthews was not arrested, but the accusation is troubling.

According to exclusive reporting by the CBC, Matthews and a group of male friends tried to open the door of a female security guard’s vehicle while she did paperwork at 2 AM.

The security guard claims the group was intoxicated.

In viral GIF, Auston Matthews checks back of player’s jersey to figure out who’s chirping him

In the third period of the Leafs-Senators game tonight, 22-year-old Auston Matthews went viral for an all-time diss where he didn’t utter a single word.

After Senators’ forward Scott Sabourin, 27, said something, which I’m going to assume was not nice, Matthews looked at the back of Sabourin’s jersey to see what his name was.
