The Pittsburgh Penguins took a moment to salute Alex Ovechkin for a milestone he accomplished earlier in the season.
The Penguins put up a graphic congratulating Ovi on passing Gordie Howe on the all-time goals list on the jumbotron of PPG Paints Arena.
Ovechkin was loudly applauded by Penguins fans attending.
Alex Ovechkin scored the 801st and 802nd goals of his career against the Winnipeg Jets on December 23, tying and passing Gordie Howe for second on the NHL’s all-time goals list. While the night was special for Ovechkin, it was also memorable for Capitals fans who were there and able to witness history live at Capital One Arena. Some even played a small part in the historic night just by being in the right place at the right time.
One of those Capitals fans was Kendall J., who attended the game with her father Jason. At the end of the night, Kendall went home with not only one cool souvenir from the game but two.

Alex Ovechkin felt gratified for being able to pass Gordie Howe on the NHL’s all-time goals list, but so did many of his teammates for just being a part of the moment. One of those players was Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who was especially grateful for being the goalie of record in the historic game.
Lindgren, a journeyman goaltender, signed a three-year contract with the Capitals over the offseason to be Darcy Kuemper’s backup. But he became way more than that for the Capitals in the month of December. With Kuemper out due to an upper-body injury, Lindgren started eight consecutive games, winning seven of them and earning NHL Player of the Week honors (for the week ending on December 11). Kuemper came back for the Capitals’ back-to-back before the holiday break, splitting the two games with Lindgren.
The game Lindgren got ended up being Ovechkin’s ‘Passing Howe’ game against the Jets. Lindgren was also in net for Ovechkin’s hat trick against the Chicago Blackhawks which gave the Russian superstar 800 career goals.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is constantly stamping his name all over the National Hockey League record books.
In almost every game he plays at this point of his career another of hockey’s legendary marks seems to fall. Ovi achieved what is his greatest individual accomplishment yet on Friday when he potted career goals number 801 and 802 to fully leap ahead of Gordie Howe for the second most goals scored by a player in NHL history.
Watching him take down Mr. Hockey from afar were his parents Tatyana and Mikhail. Tatyana, the two-time Olympic basketball champion talked to the Russian outlet Championship about the enormous milestone.

Alex Ovechkin scored the most historic goal of his career on Friday when he sent a no-look shot into the empty net against the Winnipeg Jets.
The goal was Ovechkin’s 802nd of his career, giving him sole possession of second place on the NHL’s all-time goals list.
While Ovechkin waved at the crowd and Mark Howe said his congratulations on the jumbotron, some fans were left wondering something even more consequential: Did Ovi’s empty-netter count as a McNuggets Minute goal?
The confusion was because of when Ovi scored the goal.
Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week by the league for the week ending on December 25.
It’s the second week in a row that Ovi has earned the honor and the third week in a row that a Capitals player has taken down the top spot — Charlie Lindgren being the other. Ovechkin secures his second in a row after tying and passing Gordie Howe on the all-time goals list with two goals against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

Alex Ovechkin, 37, is in the best shape of his life as he chases what was once considered an unbreakable record.
Late Friday night, after passing Gordie Howe for second on the all-time goals list, Ovechkin was ready to have a cheat meal that was so carb-y it’d get a nod of approval from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
“Going to the bar right now,” Ovechkin said to media. “Hot dog. Nachos. Why not?”
Previously, Ovechkin celebrated his 800-goals milestone with a beer bath, getting drenched in his favorite non-liquor drink, Bud Light.
After taking a pot shot at the empty net from the Capitals’ zone and missing, Alex Ovechkin made an unselfish play with another better chance in the Winnipeg Jets’ offensive zone. Ovechkin sent a pass to Evgeny Kuznetsov wide open in the high slot — the empty net yawning. Instead of shooting, Kuzy passed back through traffic to Ovechkin at the boards — a higher-risk play.
Ovechkin then fired a no-look shot into the goal and scored one of the most important goals in NHL history. No. 802 to pass Gordie Howe for second place on the NHL’s all-time goals list.
Kuznetsov spoke with the media after the game about his decision to not shoot and alternatively look for Ovi and hockey history.
