101 super adorable photos from the Capitals canine calendar photoshoot

On Monday, the Washington Capitals participated in their annual canine calendar photoshoot with Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Taking photos for the 2018 calendar, the Caps wore suits while the dogs dressed equally as fancy with bow ties and pearls. Some pups even wore, prepare yourself for this, scarfs.

Capitals players Nicklas Backstrom, Madison Bowey, Alex Chiasson, Christian Djoos, Tyler Graovac, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Aaron Ness, Dmitry Orlov, Devante Smith-Pelly, Jakub Vrana, Nathan Walker, and Tom Wilson were all photographed with dogs available for adoption through Homeward Trails. The dogs won’t be available for long after their day in the spotlight!

Jay Beagle, John Carlson, Taylor Chorney, Brett Connolly, Lars Eller, Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik, TJ Oshie, and Alex Ovechkin all posed with their own dogs.

Aside from the puppies (one of which Tyler Graovac tried to smuggle, or maybe even snuggle out in his pocket), Ovechkin’s two-year-old, 105-pound black lab Blake was definitely the star of the day.

While the official photos won’t be seen until the release of the calendar on November 20, we hope these adorable photos will hold you over until then.

Photos from Thursday’s practice: Smiley Capitals work on special teams after giving up three power-play goals to Pens

The Capitals took to the ice Thursday afternoon after the team’s 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins the night before. After giving up three goals while on the penalty kill, the Capitals spent over half their practice time going through special-teams drills.

Photos from the red carpet at the Caps home opener

Saturday before their home opener, the Washington Capitals walked a red carpet before absolutely throttling the Montreal Canadiens 6-1. The players, arriving in Capitals-branded Lexuses, were escorted down the red carpet by a fan chosen by the team. The Caps signed autographs, took photos, and showed off their fanciest suits.

The Caps should cut Taylor Chorney

Reader Jonathan Z. sent me an e-mail earlier this week spelling out why he thought Taylor Chorney should be cut instead of Christian Djoos or Aaron Ness. I agree with him. Here’s Jonathan in his own words:

The Capitals’ roster is down to eight defensemen, with one more cut expected before opening night. Matt Niskanen, Dmitry Orlov, John Carlson and Brook Orpik are locks. Madison Bowey is expected to make the team because he’s the only right-handed shot besides Niskanen and Carlson.

That means the Capitals need to cut Christian Djoos, Aaron Ness or Taylor Chorney.

Everyone seems to think it’s a foregone conclusion that Chorney will make the roster, but sending Chorney to Hershey while keeping Djoos and Ness makes sense for a few reasons, especially because Chorney has the biggest cap hit of these three players.

Photos from the last full week of training camp

A few hours before the Capitals made the most recent set of training camp cuts, the boys took the ice for another preseason preseason practice. Split amongst the two rinks at Kettler Iceplex, the Caps held normal practice before taking the ice as a team and working on their special-teams units.

The Capitals will host the New Jersey Devils tonight at Capital One Arena. With only three more preseason games on the schedule, the regular season is upon us.

Da Beauty League took team roster photos. Several current and former Capitals are in them.

This summer in Minnesota, several dozen NHL players are participating in an organized summer league called Da Beauty League.

Current and former Capitals Taylor Chorney, Nate Schmidt, Shane Gersich, Aaron Ness, Travis Boyd, and Matt Hendricks are dispersed amongst the league’s six teams which includes other NHL players and prospects.

While Chorney has lit up the scoreboard and Schmidt has played in his old Capitals gear, other familiar names have been having productive summers getting ready for the upcoming season.

On Tuesday, after former NHL All-Star Game MVP and Da Beauty League commissioner John Scott finally arrived, the league got everyone together for official team photos.

They are awesome.

Current and former Capitals to participate in popular Minnesota Summer League

Over the summer, many NHL players participate in organized summer leagues to get one final tune-up before training camp. One of these leagues is called Da Beauty League. Formed in 2015, the league has six teams featuring NHL players and prospects including Dustin Byfuglien, Jake Guentzel, Anders Lee and the van Reimsdyk brothers.

The Capitals also have some familiar names participating this summer including Taylor Chorney, Shane Gersich, Travis Boyd, Aaron Ness, Matt Hendricks, and Nate Schmidt.

Matt Niskanen will miss tonight’s game against Edmonton with lower-body injury

On Thursday, the Washington Capitals recalled forward Riley Barber and defenseman Aaron Ness from Hershey. They both may play tonight.

After the Caps’ morning skate, Barry Trotz revealed that Matt Niskanen will miss tonight’s game, after the defenseman suffered a lower-body injury Wednesday against Philadelphia.

Capitals place Andre Burakovsky on IR, recall Riley Barber and Aaron Ness

Thursday afternoon, the Capitals placed forward Andre Burakovsky on injured reserve. Burakovsky has been sidelined since breaking his hand blocking a shot during the February 9th game against the Detroit Red Wings. He is expected to be out until mid-to-late March, per head coach Barry Trotz.

The Hershey Bears split-squad shootout at practice got super competitive

During the Hershey Bears’ Wednesday practice at Giant Center, the team engaged in a split-squad shootout. Normally a drill like this is run of the mill, but for the Bears it got really, really competitive.
