The winner of the Capitals-Penguins series will play the Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference Final

The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins now know who they will be playing next in the conference final if they can win Game Seven on Wednesday: the third-worst team in the East (as judged by standings points).

The Ottawa Senators defeated the New York Rangers 4-2 Tuesday night, winning their best-of-seven second-round series four games to two. This is the first time the Senators will play in the Eastern Conference Final since 2007.

Get to know a Penguin: Talentless goon Tom Sestito could play in Game Seven

On May 5, noted goon Tom Sestito was one of 11 players called to the Pittsburgh Penguins as a black ace. Tuesday morning, Sestito officially practiced with the Penguins for the first time during the 2017 playoffs, signaling a remote chance he could suit up in Game Seven.

This battle between Sidney Crosby and Jay Beagle is what playoff hockey’s all about

Last week, Jay Beagle talked about how much he craved the physicality of playoff hockey.

“Yeah, I mean, it should be nasty,” Beagle said. “It’s the playoffs. That’s the we like to play. That’s the way they like to play. Hard hits, going after each other. These are two teams that don’t like each other. It’s fun to play hard between the whistles.”

Monday during Game Six, Beagle showed just how nasty he could get in a second period battle with Sidney Crosby. The Caps gritty fourth-line center and the game’s best player engaged in a legendary tit-for-tat, slashing and cross-checking and elbowing and punching for nearly 20 seconds straight until the whistle sounded. There were no penalties on the play.

No fate: Caps beat Penguins 5-2, force Game Seven

“Let’s just enjoy it.” That’s what Barry Trotz told the Caps when they were down 3-1 in the series. Speaking with Pierre McGuire during the second period, Trotz relayed his message to the team: a mashup of Rafiki from the Lion King (“The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.”) and everyone from the Terminator (“There’s no fate but what we make for ourselves.”). I think the Caps heard it: they played the best game of their season to force a Game Seven, at home in DC on Wednesday night.

TJ Oshie kicked off scoring by being the toe in a blistering tic-tac-toe sequence. Andre Burakovsky made it 2-0 in period two with his second goal in two games. Nicklas Backstrom kicked off the third period with a snipe to the high glove to make it 3-0. Matt Niskanen hooked up John Carlson for a perfect PPG, then Andre Burakovsky roofed it again to invoke Enrique.

Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin got two goals in garbage time, but no big deal.

We are taking Andre Burakovsky out for ice cream after this; he did such a good job.

For his second goal in two games, our nephew Andre Burakovsky made a power move to the net and beat Flower to put the Pens in a two-goal hole. #twogoalhole

Caps at Pens pregame: Two to go (Game Six)

Sunday night, the Edmonton Oilers demolished (seriously, this isn’t an exaggeration at all) the Anaheim Ducks and forced the first Game Seven of the 2016-17 postseason. Monday night, the Washington Capitals have the chance to be the second team in the 2016-17 postseason to do so. All they have to do is win tonight in Pittsburgh. Simple.

The Capitals will need to play some impeccable hockey tonight against not only the disadvantage of being on the road, but also against the return of the HBK line.

Penguins lead the series 3-2.

Puck drop is at 7:30 PM on NBCSN. We’ll see you then.

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan reunites HBK line ahead of Game Six

Late last week, Barry Trotz retooled his lines, promoting Andre Burakovsky and dropping Alex Ovechkin to the third line. Trotz wanted to spread his offense around more and create difficult match-ups for the Penguins during Game Five. It worked, as all three of the Caps scoring lines recorded goals on Saturday.

On Monday, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan countered. During the Penguins’ morning skate, the coach reunited Carl Hagelin, Nick Bonino, and Phil Kessel, the fabled HBK line, who enjoyed great success last season.

During his meeting with the press, Sullivan was coy if the line would play together during the game, saying only “there’s a possibility” it’d happen.
