Nicklas Backstrom told Ted Leonsis ‘you gotta stop giving me gifts, I got the one I need’ during 600-assist ceremony

The Washington Capitals honored Nicklas Backstrom for reaching 600 assists in a pregame ceremony, Wednesday. Backstrom recorded milestone assist number 600 on October 22 in Vancouver on a (suprise, suprise) Alex Ovechkin powerplay goal. The 30-year-old Swede reached 600 assists in only 823 games and is the first player from the 2006 NHL Draft class to reach this threshold.

The Capitals played a tribute video to celebrate Backstrom’s accomplishment that included congratulations from his family, teammates, and Swedish superstars.

Ted Leonsis even presented Backstrom with a golden puck and a Tiffany crystal with “600” engraved on them. After the game, a humble Backstrom revealed that while he was honored, he didn’t need any more gifts moving forward for one big reason.

Report: Evgeni Malkin will not be suspended for hitting TJ Oshie in the head

ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski is reporting that the NHL’s Department of Player Safety will not suspend or discipline Evgeni Malkin for his shoulder to the head of TJ Oshie.

The hit sent Oshie to concussion protocol, but the Osh Babe returned and you know what happened next.

Praise be, Braden and some historical perspective: numbers for the morning after

The Capitals and their familiar foe and rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins matched up in a contest that I think most will want to forget ever happened. The Caps however, won’t forget the two points that their goaltender and TJ Oshie earned, as they somehow won this game 2-1.

The Pens out-shot the Caps 42 to 22 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 70 to 29.

TJ Oshie gives stick he scored game-winning goal with to fan after game

TJ Oshie had one of those games you’ll never forget as a fan.

Oshie suffered two brutal shots to the head during the game — a high stick to the eye and a shoulder to the chin from Evgeni Malkin. After receiving several stitches on the bridge of his nose in the first period and going through concussion protocol in the third, the Capitals forward managed to return to late in the game and scored the decisive goal.

Sure, those things are cool and speak to TJ’s toughness as a hockey player. But it’s what happened after the game which showed some insight into Oshie’s character as a human being.

Suspended Tom Wilson called TJ Oshie an ‘absolute gamer’ after game-winning goal against Penguins

Tom Wilson may be suspended, but he made his presence known on Twitter Wednesday after the Capitals’ 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Wilson praised TJ Oshie for being an “absolute gamer.” Oshie left the Penguins game twice for two separate head injuries before returning late in the third period and scoring the game-winning goal with 1:14 remaining.

Capitals 50/50 raffle during Penguins game raises $38,570 for Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh

Ahead of their nationally telecast game against the Penguins, the Capitals announced that they would donate the proceeds from their 50/50 raffle to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, benefitting the victims’ families of the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting.

The Capitals half of the raffle raised over $19,000 for charity. But wait. There’s more.

After being knocked out of game twice, TJ Oshie returns and scores game-winning goal in final minute against Penguins

TJ Oshie’s night against the Pittsburgh Penguins got off to a rocky start. He took a stick to the eye and required stitches, then took a headshot from a disgruntled Evgeni Malkin and had to undergo concussion protocol.

But with just over a minute to go in the third period, Oshie stole the Capitals a win off a beautiful assist from John Carlson.

TJ Oshie is invincible: Caps beat Penguins 2-1

The Washington Capitals’ long homestand continued on Wednesday when the Pittsburgh Penguins came to town for the first time since last season’s legendary loffs. This game lacked the intensity of a Caps-Pens rivalry in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Other things it lacked included good passing and not-injuring-TJ-Oshie-multiple-times. This was a nasty game, but it had a happy ending.

Goal-scoring through the first two periods came from the usual suspects: Sidney Crosby scored for the Pens on a first-period power play, then Alex Ovechkin did the same on a second-period power play. As time ticked away in the third, who else would score the game-winner but the returned hero, TJ Oshie!

Caps win 2-1!

TJ Oshie leaves game after being high sticked near left eye

The Capitals and Penguins renewed their high-octane rivalry on national television, Wednesday night, but it was an injury, not offense, that marked the biggest highlight of the first period.

Capitals forward TJ Oshie absorbed a high stick under the shield. As the popular Caps forward laid on the ice, the Capital One Arena fell silent.

Oshie eventually got to his feet and skated off the ice under his own power, but went back to the locker room.
