‘I just try to do what I can do best’: Jakub Vrana peels past playoff MVP Ryan O’Reilly for first career OTGWG

Jakub Vrana is looking to elevate his game to an even higher level this season after scoring a career-high in goals (24) and signing a two-year, $6.7 million extension with the Capitals over the summer.

In his first game of the 2019-20 season, Vrana was one of the best players on the ice, registering five shots, six shot attempts, and a 66.7 shot attempt percentage at five-on-five.

But it was his determination to score during a long shift in three-on-three overtime that led the 2018 Stanley Cup champions over this year’s defending champs, 3-2.

Vrana’s OTGWG was the first of his career.

Banner raising bust up: numbers for the morning after

It’s that time of year again, folks. Hockey season is upon us once more and with that comes your obvious favorite series of posts, numbers for the morning after. Join me on yet another 82-game journey of numbers both large and small, complicated and elementary, maybe even sometimes fun. One thing I can promise is that they will always go well with your morning caffeinated drink of choice.

Your Washington Capitals opened the 2019-20 NHL season with a tasty 3-2 overtime victory over the defending Cup champion St. Louis Blues. They out-shot the Blues 34 to 22 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 40 to 28.

Caps kick off season with 3-2 overtime win over Cup champ Blues

Hey, everyone! Welcome back. Wednesday’s season opener in St Louis also marks the start of RMNB’s 10th year. Let’s get silly.

The Washington Capitals kicked off 2019-20 limply… for about 15 minutes. Clawing back from a two-goal deficit, the Caps served the reigning champion St Louis Blues some darn good hockey on their way to Jakub Vrana’s big overtime winner.

The Caps looked adrift in the first period, allowing Sammy Blais to score an early goal and Alex Pietrangelo to add another on the power play. Alex Ovechkin responded with his first goal of the season, and then Dmitry Orlov added a beautiful power-play goal in the second period. A tense third period gave us no decision, so our first game of the year got supersized, where Jakub Vrana won it in overtime.

Dmitry Orlov’s SCOARLOV ties game 2-2

Dmitry Orlov has joined the scoring in the season’s first game with an absolute weapon of a slapshot. Tying the game 2-2, Orlov took a feisty cross-ice pass from Nick Jensen and slapped into actual hell.

St. Louis Blues break tradition, wear Stanley Cup patch during home opener

Hockey season officially started on Wednesday evening. While celebrating the banner raising ceremony, the St. Louis Blues broke tradition and wore a Stanley Cup patch on their jerseys.

While teams sell jerseys with Stanley cup champion patches, no team has worn a Stanley Cup-esque patch on a jersey during a banner raising ceremony. The Blues’ white patch was immediately noticeable on their bright blue jerseys.

Fake shot, then SCOAR: Alex Ovechkin tallies first goal of season

Less than one period into the new season, Alex Ovechkin is already on the scoreboard. Ovechkin scored career goal number 659 with some fancy moves against the Blues defense.

Injury report for the Capitals first regular season game

We did it! We made it! It’s the first game of the regular season and the Capitals are in St. Louis to battle against the Blues. Puck drop will be right around 8pm EST on NBCS.

Little note on injuries, but things are improving.

Caps at Blues pregame: Are you ready for it?

I am so proud of all of us for making it here today. It’s the first game of the regular season and the Capitals are in St. Louis to battle the recent Stanley Cup Champions. I think it’s incredibly flattering that the Blues wanted to play us for their first game back (I know that’s not how it works, but I’m going with it).
