Alex Ovechkin on Nicklas Backstrom’s playoff scoring: ‘Right now, Backy is a scoring machine. I’m Backstrom.’

Nicklas Backstrom is on a scoring tear. With three goals and an assist in two games, the Swedish center is the Washington’s leading scorer in the postseason and currently tied for the most points in the entire NHL entering Sunday.

Alex Ovechkin, who is often the scorer to Backstrom’s setup man, provided the primary assist on Backstrom’s goal on Saturday.

Ovechkin joked about their role-reversal during his post-game interview.

Breaking down the Capitals celebration after Brooks Orpik’s OTGWG

The Capitals had plenty to celebrate with their overtime victory over the Carolina Hurricanes–and celebrate they did. After Brooks Orpik netted the game-winner he was mobbed by the entirety of his team.

Batya blast: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals sent their fans home happy with another playoff win at Capital One Arena over the Carolina Hurricanes. It took overtime and a Brooks Orpik blast to get it done as the Caps now head to Raleigh up 2-0 in the series.

The Caps out-shot the Canes 33 to 28.

Washington Nationals hit home runs on consecutive pitches to win after Brooks Orpik scores OTGWG

The Washington Capitals and the Washington Nationals had some crazy DC Sports Synergy at the exact same time Saturday night. Both teams essentially won their games during the same two minutes because of clutch plays.

Usually, DC Sports Teams are connected by futility, but since the Caps won their Stanley Cup, something else more fun is afoot.

I love it.

The player the Capitals get happiest about scoring ‘is probably Brooks Orpik,’ says Braden Holtby

Brooks Orpik became the unlikely hero of Game Two after scoring the game-winning goal 1:48 into sudden death overtime.

While the goal meant a lot to the Capitals — they now carry a 2-0 series lead in their first-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes — watching Orpik score the pivotal goal made it mean even more.

After the game, they shared their thoughts on the veteran defenseman.

Marcus Johansson misses Game Two of Boston/Toronto series due to illness

A late surprise for the Boston Bruins as they prepare for Game Two against the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Deadline-pickup and ex-Caps forward Marcus Johansson is missing from the lineup.

According to the Bruins, Johansson is sick.

Brooks Orpik to the rescue: Caps beat Canes 4-3 in overtime!

The Washington Capitals have taken a 2-0 series lead over the Carolina Hurricanes with a big overtime win in a wild game on a lovely Saturday afternoon.

Once again, goal scoring started off the stick of Nicklas Backstrom, who got a tasty feed from Ovechkin on a rush attack. TJ Oshie made it 2-0 with another rush goal and some terrific puck movement with him, Kuznetsov, and Niskanen. Lucas Wallmark got a weird one later in the period that Washington unsuccessfully challenged for goalie interference.

A chaotic second period found the Hurricanes tying the game with an odd goal from Sebastian Aho, taking a rebound off the boards and net-back to beat Holtby along the post.

Tom Wilson got wristshot past Mrazek halfway through the third period, restoring Washington’s lead. Dougie Hamilton scored with a nifty wristshot on the power play with five minutes remaining to tie the score again. That took us to sudden-victory overtime, where two-time Stanley Cup champion was the hero!

Caps win 4-3. Caps lead the series 2-0.

Tom Wilson scores huge third-period goal, aggressively jumps into the arms of Nicklas Backstrom

Capitals forward Tom Wilson scored a huge third-period goal midway through the third period, which gave the Capitals a 3-2 lead.

The goal, Wilson’s first of the postseason, wouldn’t stand as the game-winner though — Jordan Staal scored a PPG six minutes and five seconds later forcing overtime.
