Caps score a goal, beat the Devils: numbers for the morning after

Thursday night the Caps started off a three-game homestand by shutting out the New Jersey Devils 1-0. This game was an utter snooze-fest, with Braden Holtby’s league-leading eighth shutout only requiring that he block 15 pucks. But despite the slow pace, the Capitals passed yet another milestone, with their franchise record 14th straight home win. Jakub Vrana also scored his second NHL goal.

This was the fewest shots on goal that the Caps have given up in any game this year, but it was far from the fewest shot attempts. Somehow the Devils actually out-attempted the Capitals 34 to 32 at five-on-five, while the Caps were ahead 59 to 50 in all situation.

After a weird bounce off the boards, Official Dan O’Halloran became an unlikely participant during the New Jersey Devils’ forecheck in the third period, crashing into Braden Holtby.

New franchise record: The Caps have won 14 home games in a row

With an agonizingly slow win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night, the Capitals have now won all of their last 14 games on home ice in Verizon Center.

The opposite of exciting: Caps win 1-0

The Caps, a very good hockey team, played the Devils, a not very good hockey team, on Thursday night in DC.

The first period happened. And then the second period happened. After 40 painfully boring minutes of hockey, we went to the third tied at zero.

Then, with the Caps on the PP, SOMETHING FINALLY HAPPENED. Jakub Vrana scored to give the Caps a 1-0 lead with just under 13 minutes left.

Caps win 1-0! Holtby gets the shutout!

The New Jersey Devils are a plague

Thursday’s game between the Caps and the New Jersey Devils has been a brutal snore. With shot totals barely crawling into double digits, it’s been a typically Devils-y game: play the trap, obstruct, take zero chances, asleep in bed by 9:15.

This team makes hockey boring.

Thursday night, new Capitals defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk made his Verizon Center debut. Early in the first period, Caps PA Announcer Wes Johnson announced Shattenkirk to the crowd.

Caps vs Devils pregame: Kicking off the homestand

The Washington Capitals are home to wear some sweet jerseys for military night, begin their three-game homestand, and face the New Jersey Devils. The Capitals’ landed Kevin Shattenkirk before the trade deadline and tonight he will be making his Verizon Center debut.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils will be trying to adapt to new squad changes after they sent forward P.A. Parenteau to the Nashville Predators for a sixth-round pick and traded defenseman Kyle Quincey to the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenseman Dalton Prout.

Puck drop at 7 PM on CSN.
