Fan brings sign to game for ‘Avs legend Brooks Orpik’

Over the summer the Washington Capitals and Colorado Avalanche played hot potato with Brooks Orpik. After going to the Avs in a deal that included goaltender Philipp Grubauer, Orpik was bought out by the Avs and then re-signed by the Caps.

The morning before last Thursday’s match-up against the Avs, NHL.com reporter Tom Gulitti jokingly asked Orpik “if he had any emotions facing his former team.” But unlike Philipp Grubauer’s return home and Jay Beagle’s tearful reunion, Orpik was not overwhelmed by feelings for his former team.

But while he may have only been an Av for three days, Batya left a lasting impression on at least one fan. He’d customized a #44 Orpik Avalanche jersey and held up a sign before the game which read “Avs Legend Brooks Orpik.”

Michal Kempny gets hit by puck during warmups, bloodied

Thursday, ahead of their game against the Colorado Avalanche, the Washington Capitals took the ice for warmups without their lids. The Capitals were wearing specially-designed camouflaged hats and jerseys to celebrate Military Appreciate Night. The camo gear was later auctioned off to raise money for charity.

A helmetless Michal Kempny was an unlucky victim of some pregame pain, taking a puck to the right cheek during drills.

He immediately bent over and clutched his face, needing attention from the Capitals medical staff.

Sweeping a season series: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals continued their semi-better play of late by taking down the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 in overtime. The win was the Caps second of the season over the Avs, giving the good guys a season series sweep.

The Caps out-shot the Avs 42 to 37.

‘Sh*t’: Evgeny Kuznetsov swears during live TV interview

Evgeny Kuznetsov owes a dollar to the swear jar… again.

Kuznetsov cursed on live TV after the overtime hero was interviewed by Al Koken.

Kuznetsov was answering a question about Tom Wilson standing up for him after the Avalanche’s Ian Cole suckered him with a dirty headshot.

Give ’em the bird: Evgeny Kuznetsov scores overtime game-winning goal after dirty blindside hit

Evgeny Kuznetsov was sent to the quiet room in the third period after a blindside head hit by Ian Cole.

Kuzy returned and would have the last laugh in overtime. The Russian center ended the game with a stunning breakaway goal, unleashing his customary bird celly as the crowd roared.

The victory gave the Capitals their second straight win and their fourth in the last 11 games.

Tom Wilson bloodies Ian Cole in fight after Avalanche defenseman’s blindside hit on Evgeny Kuznetsov

Tom Wilson was effectively ejected from the Capitals-Avalanche game in the third period after coming to the defense of Evgeny Kuznetsov. Kuzy was targeted with a blindside headshot by Avalanche defenseman Ian Cole, sending the Caps center to the quiet room for concussion protocol.

In a rage, Wilson threw his gloves off and instigated a fight with Cole, raining uppercuts to the hockey player’s face.

Cole was bloodied in the bout and was ejected from the game.

Justice is served: Caps beat Avalanche 4-3

The Washington Capitals were back in action during this fine home stretch against a foe in the Colorado Avalanche that they have not met with in three months. Philipp Grubauer was back in town in an Avs sweater for the first time since he was dealt to Colorado in the offseason.

Andre Burakovsky got the good guys on the board first with a great tip in front that saw its way past Semyon Varlamov. Nathan Mackinnon tied things up with a bank shot, but Evgeny Kuznetsov restored the Caps lead on a power play shortly after. Matt Niskanen extended the lead, but the Avs would not go away as goals from Mikko Rantanen and Colin Wilson sent this bad boy to OT.

Evgeny Kuznetsov wins it in overtime!

Caps beat Avalanche 4-3!

Avalanche forward AJ Greer is a huge Alex Ovechkin fan, wants to get a stick signed

Colorado Avalanche forward AJ Greer had a familiar idol growing up: the Quebec native was a fan of Moscow native Alex Ovechkin. But “fan” may not be the right word.

Lauren Gardner, sideline reporter and host with Altitude Sports, said that calling Greer a fan “would be a colossal understatement.”

Andre Burakovsky snags his seventh goal of the season with a quick lil tip

Thursday morning, Andre Burakovksy was promoted back to the third line with Brett Connolly and Lars Eller to try and find his scoring touch.

That effort wasn’t wasted, as Burkie scored his seventh goal of the season against former teammate Semyon Varlamov 10 minutes into the first period.

The Capitals’ tribute video for Philipp Grubauer

The Washington Capitals video production crew has had a busy week. Two days after airing an emotional tribute for Jay Beagle, who returned for the first time as a member of the Vancouver Canucks, the Caps saluted their longtime Stanley Cup-winning backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer.

Grubauer was traded to the Colorado Avalanche over the offseason along with Brooks Orpik to clear cap space and give the German goaltender an opportunity to become a full-time starter.

Ahead of the game, Grubauer said that “I’ve had this date circled. Washington is always going to be home.”
