The Washington Capitals earned a rare win on the road by outworking the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. It was a good game.
Filip Forsberg scored his 10th goal in his 22nd career game against the Washington Capitals, a one-timer at the end of a long power-play session. Cole Hutson restored balance with an unlikely shot from way outside.
Boone Jenner fought off a few Preds in the paint to give Washington a brief lead in the second, cancelled out by Filip Forsberg’s 11th goal in his 22nd career game against the Washington Capitals because the Caps couldn’t get the puck out of their own zone. Going bar down, Hutson put the Caps up a goal going into the third.
A net-front scramble allowed Russ Colton, which is not the name of a tertiary character on Yellowstone, to restore the tie. Halfway into the third, after Juuse Saros misplayed the puck, Alex Tuch scored his tenth goal of the young season.
Caps beat Predators 4-3!
- We were lied to – flagrantly – about the start time of this game. There is no accountability in public life anymore. This is why trust in public institutions is eroding.
- “Bad angle – SCOAR!” is how Joe B put it when Cole Hutson scored the first of his two goals. Both were gorgeous shots – the first from impossibly wide, the second top shelf. We’re straining our necks searching for Hutson’s skill ceiling.
- That was Cole Hutson’s first two-goal game. He has taken the points lead among rookie defensemen, seven, ahead of Oliver Bonk, whose name is good.
- One week ago the key stat for Jack St. Ivany was 98.6. Warm body. For the second straight game (and on the second straight night), he’s had a pair of assists.
- Much has been typed about Alex Ovechkin‘s sunset season so far. He hasn’t scored since October 11, but he had a bunch of good looks in this one. His line with Ilya Protas and Beauvillier clicked.
- Unsurprisingly, the line with Boone Jenner, Justin Sourdif, and Ryan Leonard was the best.
- With his goal Alex Tuch becomes the fifth player to hit double digits in goals this season. All the guys before him earn 13 million-plus, aside from Artturi Lehkonen, relatively impoverished at 4.5 million.
- The pregame coverage said the Caps had wins in “each of” Charlie Lindgren‘s last two starts. Make it three. He was fine.
- Congratulations to Barry Trotz on a brilliant career. I don’t even remember the time he played Weber over Schmidt in the playoffs and then Weber choked so Hornqvist scored in overtime and then Weber immediately retired.

Fun game. Hutson’s got skills, Boone’s got grit, Tuch’s got no off button.
We’ve got a mid-afternoon game on Sunday against the very, very good Minnesota Wild. Hope your sugar hangover has faded by puck drop, which better be on time, dammit.
