Cole Hutson was all over the scoresheet in no. 10 Boston University’s 7-1 Beanpot semifinal win against unranked Harvard University on Monday. The 18-year-old rearguard led the Terriers with four points (2g, 2a), his second four-point game during his freshman season.
Hutson’s first point in the victory was a beautiful individual effort goal 5:59 into the second period, putting the Terriers up 3-1. The Washington Capitals prospect raced down the right wing, put the puck between his legs to get around a Harvard defenseman, and jammed home his sixth marker of the season past goaltender Ben Charette.
Hutson added his second point 5:25 later, providing the secondary assist on Jack Harvey’s goal to extend BU’s lead to 4-1. He then provided the outlet pass that led to his brother, Quinn Hutson, sliding a loose puck under Charette to send the Terriers into the second intermission up 6-1.
The 2024 second-round draft pick recorded his second goal and fourth point with BU on a power play at the 14:52 mark of the third period. Hutson slipped behind Harvard’s defense and finished five-hole on backup goaltender Aku Koskenvuo.
Hutson now has 26 points (7g, 19a) in 24 games this season. He has been particularly hot since returning from the 2025 World Juniors, where he became the first defender to ever lead the tournament in scoring. In his last nine NCAA games, the Washington Capitals prospect has recorded 16 points (5g, 11a).
The Missouri native ranks fifth among all freshmen in the NCAA in scoring and is the only defenseman among the top 15 first years. He is just one point behind Team USA teammate James Hagens, who could potentially go number one overall in the 2025 NHL Draft.
BU will play Merrimack on Friday night before meeting the winner of Boston College/Northeastern to determine this year’s victor of the Beanpot.
