Montreal Canadiens acquire Jake Allen from St. Louis Blues

The Montreal Canadiens landed their backup goaltender for Carey Price next season.

The Habs dealt a third-round pick in 2020 to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Jake Allen on Wednesday. The two teams also swapped seventh-round picks in 2020 and 2022.

Allen played 24 games with St. Louis during the coronavirus-shortened 2019-20 season, serving as a backup to Jordan Binnington. The 30-year-old goalie posted a 12-6-3 record with a 2.15 goals-against average, .927 save percentage, and two shutouts. Allen also played five games for the Blues in the postseason, going 2-1-1 along with a 1.89 GAA .935 SV%.

He was also a member of the Blues’ Stanley Cup-winning team in 2019.

The third-round pick the Habs dealt was originally from the Capitals for Ilya Kovalchuk, who is likely to re-sign this fall.

Allen was one of many veteran goalies who are available this offseason. The Leafs are currently shopping Frederik Andersen while the Penguins are trying to trade either Matt Murray or Tristan Jarry ahead of next season.

Braden Holtby, Thomas Greiss, Corey Crawford, Robin Lehner, Jimmy Howard, Jacob Markstrom, and Cam Talbot are among the bigger names who are also available as unrestricted free agents per Capfriendly.
