The third-round pick the Habs dealt was originally from the Capitals for Ilya Kovalchuk, who is likely to re-sign this fall.
The Habs got the pick they gave up for Jake Allen for 15 games of Ilya Kovalchuk after they picked him up for nothing. And they already had St.Louis’ 2nd after renting Marco Scandella for 20 games. I’ve changed my mind, that’s a flex and they won the trade.

Allen was one of many veteran goalies who are available this offseason. The Leafs are currently shopping Frederik Andersen while the Penguins are trying to trade either Matt Murray or Tristan Jarry ahead of next season.
Braden Holtby, Thomas Greiss, Corey Crawford, Robin Lehner, Jimmy Howard, Jacob Markstrom, and Cam Talbot are among the bigger names who are also available as unrestricted free agents per Capfriendly.
