Montgomery Co. firefighters are taking photos with their number 700 fire trucks after Alex Ovechkin scores a goal

When Alex Ovechkin scored his 700th goal, several exciting things happened. First, Ovechkin became only the eighth player in NHL history to ever hit the milestone. Second, we all got to celebrate his greatness at Capital One Arena and on TVs worldwide.

But Ovi hitting 700 has also resulted in a new tradition started by Montgomery County firefighters.

Every time Ovi scores a new goal, a different fire department has taken a photo in front of their firetruck due to the classification of their emergency vehicles being in the 700s.

So far two Montgomery County fire departments have participated in the countdown countup so far: Silver Spring’s Station 1 Volunteer Fire Department and Kensington’s Station 5 Volunteer Fire Department. Ovechkin scored his 704th and 705th goals last week against the New York Rangers.

“All our fire trucks start with the number 7,” William Macuch Jr., a firefighter at the Montgomery Hills fire department, explained to me. “It’s basically 7 plus the station number. So station 02, the Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Department, is 702 and so on.”

William added, “Montgomery County goes up to 735, and then there is a gap until 740. It ends there until 50 through 54 which are fire stations on federal properties.”

According to Wikipedia, the number classification was created so that during an emergency (that would require a response from multiple agencies), dispatchers could quickly identify what country a particular piece of apparatus came from.

If Ovechkin can become the third player ever to score over 800 goals, Prince George’s County fire departments could get in the mix too since their fire stations start with 8.

William, a big Capitals fan, just hopes the rest of the Montgomery County fire stations participate as Ovechkin continues to score at a historic rate.

The photos from firefighters are the perfect salute to hockey legend who invented the hot stick celebration and once used a blow torch on the bench.

He’s also a fan of firefighters himself.
