Sonny Milano is headed to Chocolatetown.

The 29-year-old winger cleared NHL waivers on Thursday and will join the AHL’s Hershey Bears. Milano was waived by the Washington Capitals on Wednesday so that the team could have an open roster spot to activate forward Connor McMichael from injured reserve.

Milano has played in 31 games this season for the Capitals, recording eight points (4g, 4a). The 29-year-old winger came into this past fall’s training camp without being assured a spot on the club’s final roster, having played in just three games last year due to injury.

The last time Milano was in the AHL, he played 5 games for the Bears during the 2022-23 campaign, notching 3 points (2g, 1a), before being recalled by the Capitals. During his pro career, he has played 171 AHL games with the Bears, San Diego Gulls, Cleveland Monsters, and Springfield Falcons, recording 118 points (47g, 71a).

Milano, currently signed at a $1.9 million cap hit, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer. With the demotion, the Capitals will save $1.15 million in salary cap space.
