Logan Thompson had a fresh goalie mask drafted by a new friend.
William Martel, a young fan battling a rare brain tumor, designed an awesome Capitals-themed mask as part of his radiation treatment. The radiation mask was inspired by Thompson’s Screaming Eagle mask, complete with the same six Caps players’ names, numbers, and faces along the side and Screagle logos on top.
Thompson saw the design and recently surprised Martel with a visit, hosting a joint design session with some blank goalie mask outlines.
Thompson also gifted Martel a signed stick — about as tall as him — remarking that Martel would grow into it. “I bet I will,” Martel responded.
The two spent some time talking and putting marker to paper after first deliberating what color to make their masks. Martel went with blue and red, with some yellow accents. Thompson seemed to draw inspiration from Martel, who told him his favorite number was 43.
“43? Haha, all right,” Thompson said, clearly thinking of his good pal Tom Wilson.
Wilson’s number was certainly fitting, with his swollen face featured on the back of Thompson’s mask. After chuckling at the reveal, Thompson paid tribute to his bestie and favorite prank target by including his number on the chin of his mask design.
Martel’s mother commented on the Capitals post, sharing her appreciation for the visit. “Thank you for making his treatment go just a little easier. Today was the first time he has ever smiled in the waiting room,” she wrote.
